You would think losing everything you have ever had would make one go crazy. From living your ever day-to-day life to complete chaos and abandonment. Having your reason for life stripped away in a matter of seconds. Left only with the empty pieces of a shattered heart. Now you may be curious as to how someone could go from having everything they could want to nothing at all. Well I'll tell you....It starts with the ringing of a telephone.
The sound of a telephone ringing could be heard in the apartment of Alan Ashton. Alan answers the phone "Hello". The voice on the other end of the phone belonged to a local state trooper. "Is this Mr. Alan Ashton?" the Trooper asked. Alan replies hesitantly "Yes this is he." The Trooper begins "Mr.Ashton I am Officer Tagner, I am a State Trooper. I have the unpleasant duty of informing you that your wife and child were killed in a major car accident. Alan now in a state of shock and panic begins to as several questions at a time."What? When? Where? Waa waaa......... oh God this can't be happening."
Alan Ashton is 25 and is married to Sandy (Gentry) Ashton who is also 25. They grew up together in a small town outside of Atlas Park. They lived a block away from each other while growing up. They dated off and on in high school, going to dances and football games. After graduation Sandy began going to college at the University in Steel Canyon. Alan worked in his Uncles' mechanic shop fixing flats and changing oil trying to save every dime for a ring for Sandy. Being young and in love she was the only thing in the world that mattered to him. 2 years later Alan had finally saved enough money to buy her a ring and worked up the courage to ask her to marry him. She quickly accepted and the two were married 3 months later. They were also giving the blessed news that they had a little one on the way.
Alan now sitting on the floor, clutching onto the phone as if he were trying to hold on to Sandy one last time, hears Officer Tagner continue" Mr.Ashton your car was found among the wreckage,I am very sorry for your loss". Alan with his head against wall looking at the ceiling ask Officer Tagner if he would come get him and take him to the accident. The Trooper agrees and tells Alan he will be there shortly.
As they arrive at the accident Alan is flooded with sadness and self hatred, blaming himself for letting her go into the city. The weather had been rainy and stormy for a few days now, he never gave it a thought till now. Stepping out of the Troopers car he begins to look around at the pieces of bent metal and shattered glass that laid spread across the four lanes of the road. While paramedics and firefighters hurry about trying to tend to the wounded Alan turns to speak to Officer Tagner " This is......" he stops in mid sentence when he sees a crumpled up car that resembled his own. The car was completely destroyed. The front end of the car had been ripped from the rest of the car body. The rest of the car was pinned up underneath the wheels of a City dump truck. Alan dropped to his knees the second he realized that it was indeed his car.
Alan spent almost a year in a self help hospital,in Founders Falls, trying to learn to control his emotions of anger and self hatred. He would become violent at the mere mention of the accident or of Sandys name. He would become so irate he would tear an entire room apart in just minutes. During his rampages his adrenaline would over take his body and his body temperature would reach unstable heights. The only way to keep him from harming himself is he would have to be sedated. Alan finally made progress after extensive testing and counseling. He was allowed to return to his home 10 months later.
It was strange for Alan to come back to his empty apartment. It took some time but he adjusted to the eerie silence that now filled every hallway and every room. Alan tried his best to carry on with his chance at a new life. He had over come a grief stricken heart and was freed from the heavy burden he laid upon himself. Alan made leaps and bounds in his emotional state. Until one night he was cleaning out his closet, packing up some old clothes that belonged to his wife. He reached up to the top shelf and knocked off an old shoe box full of photos of him and his wife when they were younger. Alan sits on the floor in front of the closet looking through the pictures, he quickly puts the box away as he feels his body temperature rising. It is too late though. It happens so rapidly he cannot calm down. Alan tries to stand up but ends up falling down several times. Now disoriented and delusional from the extreme internal heat, Alan pulls himself to toward the phone to call for help. As he drags himself the wooden floor where he lays is begins to burn. He reaches the couch and trys to pull himself up but the couch burst in to flames at the touch of Alans hand. Dazed and still confused he thinks to himself " This is a dream... this is all a dream". This was no dream Alan had set his apartment on fire by spontaneous combustion. Emotionally exhausted and physically drained he passes out in the fully engulfed apartment.
The sounds of sirens could be heard in the distance as the Steel Canyon Fire Department raced to the burning building.
Alan awoke in the hospital the voice of the nurse."Hey you, your the talk of the hospital." Alan still exhausted and disoriented replies "Huh? What? What are you talking about?". Alan looks up at the nurse. "You." she says. "You survived that horrific fire without a scratch or burn on you." " They are calling you Phoenix you know, rising from rubble and ashes." The doctor come in the room and sits down on the bed next to Alans. "It is absolutely astounding that you are alive." " Its nothing short of a miracle you were even found". They kept him in the hospital for a few days just to make sure he was ok.
Alan survived because the adrenaline released in his body acted as a resistant to the fire. This allowed him to abstain from being burned to death.
Alan decided to return to where his apartment once stood. The building lay in ruins, nothing but a metal structure still stands. All across the ground are burnt pieces of what was homes for several people. Alan walking threw the debris finds his wife's jewelry box somewhat intact. He opens it and finds Sandys' engagement ring inside. As he takes it out of the box he closes his hand around the ring. His hand begins to burn and within seconds his hand is on fire. He drops the ring in a panic of putting the fire out. Startled and amazed at what had just occurred he picks up the ring again, this time he is not afraid when his hand is overcome with fire. As he stands Alans body is covered with a firey aura. Unharmed by the flames Alan laughs and says " Phoenix.... hehe". Alan looks up to the sky and speaks to Sandy." I will not forget you and I will love you forever." I will do everything in my power to make sure that no one will ever have to live through what I have". "I will protect those who cannot defend themselves". Alan begins to shake as his body is yet again engulfed in flames. " I will know no fear in the face of evil". "In the never ending darkness I will be the guiding light". "I will not fail you, I will not rest".
"I love you Sandy"
I am Phoenix Ash
