The next morning, thumbing through the badges in the folders, Red Scout is finding out a lot about Paragon City. The reason Paragon has so many heroes protecting it is a couple of years ago; the Rikti came down from space and began creating havoc. Paragon City, in the middle of a crisis, sent out a call for help from Super Heroes across the world to help defend Paragon City along with the world from the alien invasion.
After a long and arduous battle, the Heroes who answered the call pushed the invading Rikti forces back, but at the cost of many Heroes lives and parts of the city destroyed along with it. Even with their initial invading forces defeated, many Rikti are left marooned in Paragon City. As Paragon City was beginning to rebuild and the civilians recover from the attack; gangs, monsters and evil corporations moved in to take over. Arch-Villains with plans for world domination leading them, hey easily took parts of Paragon City and dug their claws deep into their claim. And another call went out, for the Heroes of world.
Continuing to look through the folder, Red Scout stumbles across a card with the name Coyote located in the Outbreak Zone, below all that reads ‘I will help you get started on your Super Hero career.’ Flipping the card around Red Scout sees there is a time of 9:00 a.m. written in pen, he quickly looks up to the clock on the wall to see that it was 7:20 and he got up to get ready.
After a quick shower and a trip on the train, Red Scout is standing in front of a giant concrete wall, with huge steel doors surrounded by a chain link fence with barbed wire wrapped around the top of the fence. Two Swat team members are standing guard, one on each side of the giant steel door.
“I’m here to see Coyote.” Red Scout says as he walks up to the guards.
“Not like that, your not.” Says the guard on the left.
“What? Why not?” asks Red Scout.
“Because if you go in there without a costume, then you are letting all the baddies in Paragon City know your secret identity.” Replies the guard on the right.
“Look, I don’t know who I am, or how I got to Paragon City. I don’t have any family, friends or an identity… So I’m not worried about some “baddies” knowing who I am!” Red Scout exclaims.
“Alright, alright go on in. Coyote is straight ahead and to the left, once you get the cross street turn left and he will be on the right side of the street.” The guard says as he pushes a button the wall causing the steel doors to creak open allowing Red Scout to walk in.
Inside the Outbreak Zone the city that once stood here now lays in ruins. What was salvageable is separated from the wreckage with a barbwire chain link fence. Hoots and hollers drift through the air from the devastated part of the city. Only one building looks as if it was built in the past year and it is a hospital.
Continuing his trek through the Outbreak Zone, Red Scout pass guards, police officers and guys in lab coats standing around some scrap heaps. Finding the cross street he needs, Red Scout turns left and sees a red and white clad Super Hero looking guy.
“Coyote?” asks Red Scout, walking up to the Super Hero.
“That’s me, and you would be?” inquires Coyote.
“I’m Red Scout, I found your card in my, uh, welcome folder.” Answers Red Scout.
“Red Scout? Ah yes, I’ll be helping you find your powers follow me.” Coyote says, leading Red Scout into the building behind them.
Standing inside one of the offices in the run down building, Red Scout looks around at all the regalia on the wall of the room.
“Alright, there are two ways we can bring forth your powers.” Coyote begins. “The easy way, or the long way.”
“What’s the easy way?” asks Red Scout.
“A sudden provocation by blunt force.” Coyote replies.
“Alright let’s try that.” Red Scout says as Coyote pulls his right arm back and hits Red Scout in the face as hard as he can causing him to jerk back to the right. Red Scout steps back rubbing his jaw as Coyote rubs his knuckles.
“Well that didn’t work, but I know one of your Tanker Invulnerability powers is working.” Says Coyote, stilling working out his hand. “But it didn’t bring out your ire abilities. So, now we do it the long way.” Coyote leads Red Scout to a big conference room type area of the building; inside of it there is all kinds of training equipment and padded mats. Coyote directs Red Scout into the room.
“Alright, since the punch didn’t bring forth any of your melee attacks, I’m going to give you the general idea of your first two possible attacks that you can access.” Coyote begins, “These are the easiest attacks to obtain with little to no experience.” Coyote grabs a remote control from a nearby table and presses the first button, which causes a panel TV to lower from the ceiling.
“The first attack is Scorch.” Coyote says pressing the second button making the TV spring to life and shows a demonstration of the power. “Now Scorch is a basic attack in which fire is produced from the hands and is projected on to the assailant by touching them.” Clicking the second button again the TV shows the demonstration of the second power. “And this is Fire Sword. With this power you are able to produce a sword made of pure fire. No it doesn’t cut people in half but it does significant damage along with the occasional burn that will go along with it.”
Red Scout looks down to his hands and thinks to himself ‘so this is the beginning of the powers I am capable of. This is what they intended me to have.’
“Now that you know the basic attacks, I want you to go over to that practice dummy and I want you to concentrate on the power.” Coyote says pointing to the practice dummy. “Do whatever you think that will help you bring forth your powers, get angry, think of a moment of helplessness. I’ll be outside and I’ll check on you periodically to see how you’re doing.”
Red scout walks over to the practice dummy as Coyote walks out the door. ‘All right, I can do this. Concentrate on fire.’ Red Scout thinks to himself as he stares at the dummy. Breathing deeply and standing with his feet at shoulder length apart his elbow bent and his fist in front of his chest. Red Scout thinks long and hard about fire bursting from his hands and enveloping the practice dummy.
An hour passes and nothing has happened. Feeling the frustration build, Red Scout loses his temper and punches the dummy in the face, causing it to wobble. Angry that it didn’t fall down, he grunts and grabs the dummy by the neck with both hands. All his frustration comes to a head and his hands burst into flames. Startled from it, Red Scout lets the dummy go and steps back.
“I did that?” Red Scout exclaims in confusion, looking around he doesn’t see anyone with him. Excitement surging through his body, Red Scout snarls and thrusts his hands to the practice dummy and watch as it catches on fire again.
“Congratulations.” Coyote says from the doorway. “You can now call yourself a Super Hero.”
