| tech savvy people help!!! |

|
i have a dilemma that maybe a techie could solve. i will be going back to college in 2 weeks and they haev the internet so blocked that i cant play city of hereos there. however, many of my friends can play world of warcraft. i asked our server/internt guy who handles that kind of stuff at our school and he said the error i got while trying to play was a result of the P2P ports being blocked by the school. can anyone help? how can people play WOW but not COH? wouldnt they generally run the same way? they're both MMORPG arent they? is there anything i can do to bypass? any help would be greatly appreciated.

hum, wish I could be of some help here, but saddly not. Might ask your friends that are getting trhough if they made any changes to settings... also might send something off to cryptic... they might know.

I have your solution. I had the exact same problem at my school. The internet had certain things blocked. My school blocked DLs from places/programs like Kazaa, iMesh, and Ares. A side effect of blocking those is also blocking many Online games. I got CoH back when it originally came out, and I ended up having to wait till the summer to start playing because of our school blocking internet stuff. My solution was this: I found out who was in charge of regulating the internet for our school's InfoTech Dept. Then I wrote him an e-mail describing my problem. To fix the problem, he opened up a port on the server (the specific port needed for CoH), and my problem was solved! So, to put it simply: ask your IT/Network Dept to open up a port for you to play City of Heroes on. Chances are they will. Good luck!

wow vince!! you are exactly in my boat. i cant use kazaa imesh etc lol. i did ask my guy if they would ever BE opened or turned on, but ill haev to ask this time if he actually will. i think he told me the reason was for security..is that what your guy told you? how did you handle it? thanks for the help.....i knew someone would have an answer :)

hey vince, mayb eyou could help with this specific problem...what exactly did you ask him to turn on? was there a specific port name or something liek that? or did you just describe the situation and he pretty much knew what you were talking about?

You need the following ports to be opened on the firewall to play CoH:
TCP: 6994, 2104, 2106
UDP: 7000-7100
I am unsure of the exact IPs of the CoH servers, but hopefully if you ask the LAN Administrator to open up these specific ports for you he will.
