How to RP

So, how do you really RP on CoH?

I've done MUDDs in the past so I know the basic idea behind it, but how do you handle things that are Out of Character (OOC) like people disconnecting, leveling up, etc.

I've seen ((blah)) which I assume is OOC chat

I would like to hear how to, your views, etc on RPing in CoH

RE: How to RP

Like all other MMORPG's the atmosphere in CoH is not really condusive to RP. Even on Virtue (the unofficial RP server) raito of those who rp to those who do not is huge. Still finding a good group (Gemini Park in GC has a lot of RPers usually) or a good RP SG really helps.

Our SG is RP friendly and we all try to keep in character, but there is no stigma to OOC chatter either.

In general, as you observed double brackets are used to show any OOC text.

Our RP is about 50/50 planned and spontanious. We had an interesting bit of unplanned RP early in the SG when one of our sonic blasters suddenly lost her powers (and the ability to speak) because of damage caused by constant use.
Over time we RP'd research into sonic mutations and eventually (with the assistance of stoic, yet helpful Positron) came up with a cure.

As for planned RP, we just finished a large story arc involving our SG's Preatorians. The conclusion of which helped several characters work in power respecs in character.

As long as everyone has fun (and no one imposes their RP on someone else i.e. Godmoding) there isn't a set "way" to RP in CoH.

RE: How to RP

There are, however, a lot of common tricks people use to indicate roleplaying or not roleplaying. You already picked up on ((ooc stuff)). The double parentheses always indicates ooc comments, but only dedicated roleplayers use it. If you see someone use it, then you can assume chat without it is in character.

There are also two ways to emote in this game. You can type /e blablablah, which puts blablablah in a thought balloon. The text int the chat window starts with the toon's name, but no colon. If you are playing Miss Forgetful and type "/e wonders where she left her keys..." then nearby players would see "wonders where she left her keys..." in the thought balloon, but "Miss Forgetful wonders where she put her keys..." in their chat windows.

There is also a fair amount of roleplaying on global chat channels. Since your global name appears the same no matter what toon you are playing, altoholics have a trick for roleplaying all toons with the same global handle. Your global handle has one persona, which may or may not be the same as one of your toons. When you say something in character for any other toon, you put the toon's name in brackets, [like this], so everyone knows who's saying it.

Roleplaying in CoH is done almost entirely with chat. The animated emotes aren't really much help with this, but you can create macros to personalize your toon's habits. For example, my toons have different AFK macros. One opens up a newspaper and checks sports scores, while another produces a laptop and checks this website.

Be warned, though. If you choose to roleplay in CoH and refuse to step out of character, non-roleplayers will think you're either stupid or a n00b. That's their problem, not yours, but be prepared for it and don't take it badly. An example of this would be when I played a Corabelle, who is a cat, in a sewer mission and refused to get in the water; I kept getting comments about how it didn't matter, everyone can swim in this game, etc.

That is a good simple solution to the global channel problem (Somthing our SG has been considering as we get close to 75 active characters)

I know that improvements to global chat have been announced for I7 ... perhaps character name in global chat will be one of them.

It would be nice if we could get a round of RP emotes too ;)
