HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

Ok, here's the deal, I'm really getting annoyed by the crapiness of the tankers I keep getting teamed up with. My scrapper kicks butt, but he's no tank on defence naturally, so I like to run with a tank. I just keep getting ones that SUCK. Now, I do know a lot about tanking and I'd like to just say here for anyone that is considering tanking or currently tanking to please listen up.

Yes, forgive my tone if I'm a little testy, this is under the rant and rave section... :-)

Ok, first of all what DOESN'T make you a good tank:

1. Your damage resistance. So what if 300 bad guys can attack you all at once and you can sit there and laugh at them. You may be saying, "What the heck does he mean by this?" Just pay attention and follow me on this ok?

2. Your defence. Ya, so you may be a super slick ice tank that never get's slowed, or an invuln that dances like crazy and never get's hurt. I don't give a crap, and neither does your team. Keep paying attention.

3. Your "sick" damage. Ya, you guys that have energy as your secondary, I'm really impressed... Or you fire tanks that burn everything down. That's just great. Blasters can usually do it way better. This DOESN'T make you a good tank.

4. Your ability to herd. This one pisses me off the most. I don't give a crap whether you call it herding or stacking, this does NOT make you a good tank! While this can be done good, I keep runing into tanks that just herd because they must have really small.. um, you know, and herding must make them feel big or something. HERDING doesn't make you a good tank.

5. Taunting. Yes, taunting is good, and I think taunt is an excellent power for a tank to have. It's not necessary for him to be a good tank, but it's not a bad thing - it's good. But this whole "run up to a group and stand far far away from it and taunt half the group to come after you while the other half decimates the squishies in one aoe they fire at you" thing just 'ain't happenin'.

Ok, now, I will explain the 1 and only thing that makes a tank a great tank, and I don't care what type of tank you are:

drumroll please

The thing that makes you a good tank is your ability to PROTECT the other members of your team!!!

PERIOD.

END OF CONVERSATION.

NO IFS, ANDS, or BUTS about it!!!!!!

That means everyone that can attack should be attacking you at every given chance they can! You can be a granite tank, and if the whole team get's killed because you couldn't keep the baddies attacking you - then you SUCK as a tank, I don't care if 300 bad guys attack you all at once and you just laugh at them!

I know bad things happens, but 9 times out of 10, you as the tank should protect the team! If there is a team wipe, it should be that you did everything you could to keep ANYONE else from dying and you wound up going down heroically.

It's SO REDICULOUS when some stupid invuln tank goes out and herds 5 groups together and while he's runing by to get them in a corner somewhere 1 whole group splits off and takes out half the team!

Then the tank blames the people who just got wasted!

Then we have to stand around for 30 seconds until he's "built up enough aggro" then we are "allowed" to attack. So we start attacking and half of the 300 baddies fire back at the poor blaster and he goes down.

The tank then cusses and start lecturing us on what we need to do.

When I tank, I make the game fun for everyone that is playing with me, I treat people with respect and don't lecture them (especially when we're talking about players that are high levelers), and most of all:

I PROTECT THE TEAM

That means when I see a single lone freak swiper splits off I taunt him, thow something at him, do WHATEVER I CAN to make sure he "picks on someone his own size" instead of the cute little blaster in a miniskirt who will get one shotted if I don't!

That means IF I HERD - I make sure they all stay on me! Yes, herding is good, damage resistance is good, defence is good, taunting is good, the sick damage that a fire tank or whatever you can provide in that area is GOOD! But it is not what makes you a great tank.

It is the protection of others that makes you a great tank, and everyone will agree that a great tank is a hero to the heros.

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

Obviously you have met with many... as you so graphically put it "Crappy Tanks" I myself have a very good Tank who knows his job and does it well, if your ever on Champion server look me up, @Anachron.

I don't apologize for other Tanks and frankly don't care how they play, if you choose to team with a crummy tank then you get what you deserve... get over it.

There are as many other ATs who don't have a clue either, I have been on teams where they expect a Tank to be god, no heals no assistance from anybody... basically do it all and if they die then they suck as a Tank, news flash... Tanks die... m' kay?.

Trust me if I play on a team that thinks i'm god, I will do my job as well as I can till I die... then i'll go to the hospital and let the team know i'm off, I have gotten debt up the wazzu from protecting loose cannon ATs who think they can aggro a whole room with a bloody AoE attack then expect me to save them... yeah right... I will try to do what I can but basically your SOL and the only one to blame is YOU.

I am loyal to a team and will die many times to protect a good team (well if I die many times means the teams not as good as could be, then again maybe mission is set to high for their skill level as well) I will even try to protect the idiots and hope the rest of the team can tell who the moron is who keeps screwing things up.

You want to see a good Tank in action? i'm your Tank.... let me prove it, over 50 people on Global (for Tanking, Skill and loyalty to a team) Friends list has been full for Months as well.

My Build includes TP friend, and I always carry spare awakes and greens for my team to use as needed.

I never Power Leveled my Tank, so I know all its strengths and weaknesses well, I complete my Story Arcs and protect my teams as well as I can.

When I play my Tank... I AM ANACHRON!.... I AM TANK!

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

Are you a lvl 50 Ice tank? Not many of those around, I just started an ice tank the other day, depite that fact that so many people say they suck. I think they have what it takes, relying more on control powers than raw damage resistance, that right?

Hey, btw, you sounded like you were defending "tanks" in general as though I'm coming at what I was saying having not been in a tanks shoes. I know what I'm talking about when it comes to tanking, and I know what they can and can't do, I play lots of alts, but tanks are my specialty. I wrote this for people who are considering starting a new tank.

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

Yes I am an Ice Tank (in my sig) and it does sound like i'm defending Tanks, but i'm not i'm only stating that there are many good Tanks and i'm one of them, when I started I used common sense in my build (and what sounded good.)

QUOTE

Not in the strictest sense of the word "Control" It is more about the ability to hold aggro and take and give damage(although I traded some offensive power for defenses but kept enough offensive powers to do some damage as well(raw damage resistance is a must for a tank and Ice seems to cover the spectrum of defensive abilities, you can't protect a team if your one shotted by an enemy) I am slotted for fast recharges of important powers, including the ability to call enemies off team members or attack them and defend my team, I designed myself around team defense and aggro.

I am designed with fairly good resistance to Psi and many other attacks, I can even stand up to 2 direct hits from a Hamidon Mito before I start to really worry.

If you want I can list my build and you can judge it that way as well, if you need assistance with Ice Tanking let me know.

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

I'd love to see your build, plz list. When I said control I was refering to the slow powers (icy aura or something like that) and how ice guys can't really ever get slowed themselves.

I know you have hoarfrost, which for anyone reading is basically dull pain, but other than that what actual powers does an ice tank have to resist damage? I mean, just looking under the hero builder it looks like they have a ton of defence to where they don't get hit much, but if they do get hit by smash/lethal/energy attacks they get hurt pretty bad. True or false?

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

False, with my build I take some damage but it gets replaced just about as fast as I get it, and the hits that do make it through usually do very little damage.

I have not used the Hero Builder yet, so haven't checked the numbers.. hold onto your socks lol... I don't have "Hoarfrost" as a power :D

Now no worries, I know I need to do another respec, and once done I will be even better so i'm going to send you a link to view the slotted enhancements and the information in a PM before I post it here, just to get your opinion, and weather or not I should post it in its current shape. :/

I also need to run the Hero Builder for myself, I have this feeling I am missing a lot :D and this means improve my already stellar Tanking abilities :)

I will be able to make myself even better then I am, and I also hear I7 is going to un-nerf some items that pertain to my build, it just get's better and better... :D

Amen to that! I've been on a couple of teams where the Empathy defender has all three heals available, but sits there blasting away while my HP bar goes down, down, down. Then they go, 'Stay put, I can rez.', which wouldn't have been an issue if they had been healing in the first place.

I'll admit to struggling occasionally with my Force Field defender, but FF's are very fire-and-forget in terms of their powers. However, I always try to keep my team in bubbles, even if it means bubbling every 1 to 2 combats. However, I am not perfect, and occasionally my bubbles drop for a bit. Just keep in mind that while some people just aren't good at the job they're trying to do, some of us are just trying to learn our craft. Thanks for listening.

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

I played an Inv/SS tank to 36 pre-I6 and did a lot of herding and holding while blasters beat them into a pulp. I never had to much problem holding aggro.

I have run into problems with people attacking before I've gotten into place and thrown a few extra taunts and punches out. That lesson was usually self explanatory.

Also, blasters that throw lot's of AoE's and not finishing the whole crowd. I've played a Blaster to 50, and that's what used to get me killed (rarely, I might add). I would throw out so much damage I would draw lots of aggro. More than the tank could compensate for in the short run. I was just aware of that and would make my self scarce until he re-captured the aggro.

I'm not defending tanks, but I think squishies need to be aware of their sorroundings and take care NOT to enter into melee combat. I admire you trying to stay around and heal me as a tank, but usually a good build doesn't care if you run for 10 seconds to avoid the Freak Tank Boss. As long as you pop on by and throw me a heal a few times.

I played a scraper to 27 (reference sig below) and I hardly had any problems with him and dieing while grouping. Obviously you can't avoid melee combat, but watch your health and high tail it out of there if it dips dangerously. If the tank is well built, he can live without you while you heal or rest.

What's more, I went from 36 to 50 with 2 friends (Inv/SS tank, and a MA/DA scrapper). We knew our AT's strengths and weakness'.

The scrapper and I knew, that no matter what the tank did, if one of us laid out an obscene amount of damage, those not killed could all very well turn on us. I watched for it and bogied if they did.

Giving the Tank time to recapture them. Same for the scrap. Having done much herding with that tank, I made mine after I got to 50 with the blaster, and educated many a team on how to herd with minimum debt and max xp.

I guess what I'm saying is, know thy AT, Aggro and Hate.

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

I agree, you ahve to know your AT. Tanks are designed for anchoring. They are the sheild of the group. The blaster and scrappers are the sword. The defensers and controllers are the medics and artillary, firing and supporting from behind the lines. Thiose are the roles of the AT's. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a tank who thinks he's a heavy scrapper, thinking he's supposed to be a damage dealer. Or the blaster that has energy melee who want to play scrapper. Or the healler cutting lose with energy blasts while people are needing heals. You should know yyour AT.

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

i get the feeling some of Starwole's post was directed at me...

i know i whine and complain alot about how horribly defensible my tank is, (if u read the posts around here u know lol), but i stilled tried my best to tank. infernal's melees one shot me? so i stand back and taunt him non-stop once the other baddies in the room are dead. as long as he shoots fire at me he doesnt have time to pull out his axe and wail on anyone else.

just remember future tankers who r reading this, even if u have great defense or lousy, other ATs have worse so its YOUR job to make sure they dont get hit.

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

Well, in the defense of some of us decent tankers, I got a few things to toss in here.

First off, whenever I'm tanking with Swinging Fist, I'm usually running about 100 yards or more in front of the group so that I can aggro and hit anything that I can in the current group that I'm fighting. If its a high lvl mish for me, I'm usually the first to go down, but that's also giving the team time to either A-Run or B-Take down the baddies. What gets my goat as a tanker is the squishie blaster that snipes or simply shoots the lead baddie of a group BEFORE I GET THERE TO AGGRO THEM! Y'all want me to tank? Fine, but let me do my job. Don't try to pick them off before I get there cause then the baddies run right by me and go for your sorry butt.

Second off, the complaints. I know how to tank so please don't give me advice while I'm fighting. And if you run off from the group and get yourself killed, don't go blaming me for your idiotic mistake. That's the quickest way to lose my tanking services cause I will quit the team in the middle of a fight and allow you to accumulate debt if I'm pushed far enough.

Third off, Sidkicking. If you're a high level toon sidekicking a low level Tank. DO NOT LEAVE THIER SIDE. PERIOD. I constantly cringe everytime Fist gets SKed with one member of our SG casuse they like to, as I put it, "Get distracted by the shinyes". This member's not the first person to do this to me nor will they be the last. I don't care where the hell that AV is running to, if you outdistance your sidekick in a high level area, their life expectancy can be measured in milliseconds. If your tank sidekick dies because you hung them out to dry, expect to be getting some pretty nasty tells coming your way.

Alright, I'm done now. :)

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

Well, needed to rant a bit and this thread is close enough to my topic that I will use it and not start another...

I was playing my L44 Spines/Regen Scrapper last night and picked up the mission with the AV Bile in it. For those of you that have run this mission you know it is xp-heaven! Outdoor portal mission with tons of Freakshow! To get max benefit I invite a full team, one of whom was a L43 Invuln/SS Tank from this SG I recently joined. Now we are running the mission on Invincible so we are fighting L46 Freaks with a healthy dose of bosses. Up to this point I had yet to meet a Tank that was in the 40's that was not a mega bad-ass able to laugh off the hits of large numbers of mobs. So I thought the routine would be normal: Tank rushes in and grabs aggro, controllers lock 'em down and we scrappers and blasters shred 'em. Tank rushes in and dies almost instantly! I thought, OK, they got off some lucky hits or he forgot to turn his toggles on or something. Several of us die in the ensuing confusion, but we manage and head onto the next group. Tank rushes in, again dies almost instantly! So now I'm wondering what the heck is going on. I called up his info and check out his build. I obviously cannot tell how his powers are slotted, but I notice right away that he does not have Unyielding. The guy must have been getting his toggles dropped almost immediately with the first hit! I ended up taking over the Tanking job and we did alright after that -- gained a whole half-level from that mission in spite of 2-3 deaths.

There, got that off my chest. An Invuln Tank without Unyielding??!! Jeesh!!

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

I love my tank. That ice aura taunting is great. I can remember holding 2 +3 bosses on a team of 3. Me, a healer, and a blaster. I held the bosses indefinatly while I got a few heals now and then. The blaster kept dishing out damage, resting, dishing out damage.... resting.... for a while before those 2 bosses were dead. I just sat their the whole time. Did a few attacks. I /e dance-d most of the time. And /e protest. I love doing that. Just sitting there with all the enemies attempting to attack you. Just pull out a sign and protest their bad behavior. Its the ultimate good guy way!

I love my tank. Even though I have a rather bad build of him right now. Can't wait to respec him. I took too many attacks and I'm hurtin from lack of Stamina and Glacial Armour. Oops.

Tanks are suppost to be hit. The other ATs are not. Any Tank that can't hold the enemy off his friends, is playing the wrong AT. Period.

RE: HOW NOT TO BE A CRAPPY TANK!!!!

Darn I,m so noob at these forum things; I inadvertently gave a 0 to your post when I do beleive it merits an 8; so sorry... Hope giving it to your second post will correct things up somewhat.

Anyway...

I agree entirely with your assessment.

I play SS/Inv tanks quite often. I rarely take and rarely use taunt... and nobody goes to the hospital while I'm around... unless I go there first.

As a tank, I always goes in first and get out last, spearheading the team's assault and covering everyone's retreat; when I say run, they better comply because at that moment, I know that I will not stay up much longer as I will stay there to give them a chance to escape.

I do not herd; why do we have to bring them down all at once? what's the rush? Even in a timed mission, there is plenty of time to divide mobs and bring them down in small manageable groups. By manageable, I mean that, as a tank, I can keep them all on me and I can spot the one breaking off to threaten my comrades, get to him before he can really hurt them while still keeping the others on me.

I use hand clap(3 slotted for increased attack rate)to get them to notice me. I knock them down (so they can't hurt anybody)and thus easily aggro up to 10 of them at a time with it and they stay on me. Therefore, I find that taunt is not really needed, letting me free to add another attack power to punchvoke, weaken and threaten them, so the damage dealers can clobber them with mimimal risk.

Although my tanks are built like scrankers (lot of attack powers, protections heavily slotted) I always manage to do what I see is my essential purpose in a team: protect my friends from harm.

I use the same principles with the Kheldians Dwarf form; I use it's area attack to both weaken and taunt them, always thinking and acting with the sole purpose of keeping my teamates out of danger.

So far, it works quite nicely.
