Soooo...If you didn't know, about a month or so ago, the major soda corporations (Coca Cola, Pepsi, etc.) agreed that they would remove all soda products from public schools. They will still supply juices and water to elementary and middle schools, and high schools will have sports drinks and diet soda. This move was made in the name of reducing childhood obesity, and the catalyst was outside pressure from federal organziations. Apparently, kids don't get fat eating junkfood at home when their parents aren't controlling their diets. It's actually the 1 or 2 sodas that they drink during school. :P
Anyway...I jumped onto the My Yahoo sign-in page yesterday, and one of the articles caught my eye. I wanted to link it in this thread, but I couldn't get GameAmp to come up for some reason, and Yahoo moved it elsewhere. Anyway, the article explained that the FDA is asking all restaurants that serve "fastfood" to reduce the size of their portions, provide additional nutritional information, and/or allow customers to substitute fatty sides with healthy alternatives.
Onto the rant - Is anyone else concerned by the fact that the federal government is starting to play a role in what Americans are allowed to eat? I understand that there's a weight problem in the country, but I don't feel that removing our right to choice is the answer. I have my own ideas on the subject...But I don't want to offend anyone. I'm just getting extremely upset that the government is making moves to restrict my options. I'm not overweight, and my diet is probably worse than an obese person's. I work out enough to ensure that my weight isn't an issue. So what happens when the FDA starts placing formal restrictions on serving sizes and fat content? Am I supposed to pay for two orders just because I want to fill up? Does anybody else have a problem with this?

P.S. - Found it.

All I can say is this is yet another reason I don't read the news.
While america is over weight, I don't think the goverment trying to take control like this is going to help the problem. I could probably post 3 or 4 pages worth of a rant on this topic, but instead I'm going to make pretend that I didn't read this or the news article, and hope the restraunt industry is powerful enough to stop this from happening.

Well, in case you didn't know Coca-Cola and Pepsi and all other
beveregaes contain HUGE amounts of sugar. I'd say a can of coke can contain the same amount of sugar than 20-30 sugar cubes (those that you stuff to your coffee. I don't know the real word! ><). So if you drink 2 cans of coke per day at school that'll be 50-60 cubes of sugar and that's alot. Especially if you take 2 cans 5 days a week. :)
I'm in upper secondary school atm and We've never had anything else in our school but milk and water, untill this year.
I'm quite fat and I now that I think of it, I would've given anything if our goverment would've stopped me overeating when I was a kid. :P
But I really don't know what to say about this. I think it's because weight is a huge issue in America amd I think they're doing those restricionts because of the fact that America has a lot of "large people" and that information is spreading through world so the guys in American Goverment are feeling embarrassed and they want to do something about it. :P
-That's only my theory though. I hope I didn't offend any Americans. If I did, Sorry. :(

i just hope their reduce their prices as well as the portion size! i agree with taking the sodas out of schools cause most kids dont know any better and drink what tastes good. when i was in high school they were filling up the machine outside the cafeteria at least 3 times a week because kids would be stopping all day long to get a cold beverage.

Okay, folks. Here's my main issue with the soda. The federal government shouldn't be responsible for what kids are drinking. Parents should be responsible for what kids are drinking. When I was a child, I was only given enough money each day to have lunch. If I decided to have a soda, then I had to go hungry for the rest of the day. It's that easy. My mother knew that I'd waste extra cash on nastiness, so I didn't get any. Parents have thousands of choices today that will allow them to extend their children some sort of emergency funding while maintaining strict accountability and regulation. To say that the federal government had to intervene because parents are negligent is a conviction of the American lifestyle and parenting as a whole.
As for restaurants, American obesity isn't their concern. Take the major fastfood restaurants for instance. McDonald's got knocked by a ridiculous documentary, and they reacted by reducing their options. How did their competition handle the situation? Did they act in turn? No. They expanded their menus to include larger sandwiches and value meals. They offered the American consumer something that they had grown accustomed to. Another example is Wendy's. Wendy's caters to one of the FDA's recommendations by offering healthy alternatives to their sides at no extra cost. That being said, how many people roll up to the drive through and order the fruit cup instead of a large fry? Hardly any, right? Restaurants can't be held accountable for American obesity. Only Americans can be held accountable. When an American takes responsibility for his weight, such as myself, he's offended when he's finds out that the government is stepping in to "assist." It isn't necessary because I already know how to control my diet...Thanks anyway. :P

I think the whole obesity issue is typical of the world today. Dispite it being evident there is a problem for a long while, people do nothing about it until it has reached its apex.
Obesity and bad eating habits has been a problem for decades. However the world doesn't take notice until their are 12 year old kids with bowel cancer or whatever.
And even know, when the problems are in the public eye, they are famous, there are movies about it and they are at their very worst - What little changes are being made are minesque and mis-guided.
The obesity can't be solved by taking sugary drinks out of schools, or offering 'healthy' options at fast food resturants. These two examples themselves do not and will not work. They have taken away soda at my school and all it does is make people buy the stuff out of school. It doesn't solve anything. And why would you ever go to McDonalds for a salad? (especially if it contains more fat than a burger).
The problem isn't Coke or Quarter Pounders, its Culture. For years people have got used to eating the way they are, and making such meaningless changes won't do anything.[/B]

Perhaps few people order the fruit cup, but look how many people order the baked potato instead of fries. It really is much healthier and it's very popular.
As for the apple juice, you're right that it has more calories than soda, but it also has your entire day's supply of vitamin C. Coca Cola is just empty calories. In addition, if you order the apple juice, you just get the one serving. Nearly anywhere you go to eat, the soda is bottomless.

You shouldn't confuse quantity with quality, although Motts might have more calories, this is offset by the nuitritional value of the juice.
As to Obesity and the right to choose...
Most people are not that smart...
http://www.geocities.com/rnseitz/Definition_of_IQ.html?20063
http://iq-test.learninginfo.org/iq04.htm
...And therefor need to be protected from themselves, they need leadership and guidance, they may cry about it but deep down they need it, look at all the warning signs and labels and yet people still run Red lights or Stop signs, or drink poison or smoke Cigarettes... imagine what it would be like without these things enforced by governmental laws and officials, ie Warning Labels, Law Enforcement, Product danger disclosures etc...
I don't like government intrusion any more then the next person but then again I don't like listening to people moan and cry and complain about how this made them fat or that made them fat or they got cancer from this or that, blah blah blah...
People need guidence, at work one of my jobs is to protect the public from themselves, it sounds insane but its a fact that I live with daily and know is necessary.
The cost of obesity is high, and I applaud the government for getting involved, its sad that the industries that contribute to the problem and the people who blindly allow it to happen need government intervention to do what's right, but them's the facts like it or not, those industries don't care about your health just their profits.
When people are able to make the right choices on their own then government intervention will be un-needed, I however do not see this happening for a long long time...

1. I think the only place that you see a significant number of people ordering the baked potato instead of fries is at "sit down" restaurants.
2. They're normally loaded with sour cream, butter, and bacon.
Either way, what I'm really worried about is government regulation of food choice. It might be far into the future, but it is a valid concern. The idea of it invokes thoughts of "Demolition Man" and "Equilibrium."

Shipmate, you must be joking. No one cares about your health. The only person that cares about your health is you and your family. Home Depot doesn't care if you make a great shed. Nike doesn't care if your shoes improve your performance. Banana Replublic doesn't care how your clothes make you look. On the same note, restaurants shouldn't care if their food makes you fat. If you're a fat person, then you have no one to blame but yourself.
I honestly feel like the issue with American society is that we've adopted the idea that you should feel good about yourself no matter what. I don't think that should be the case. When I was a kid, I was a little butterball. The bigger and skinnier kids beat the crap out of me and isolated me. While the treatment was cruel, it sparked a fire under me. Now, I lift weights regularly and run my ass off in the gym. I don't have a weight problem because society taught me that being fat isn't accepted. Nowadays, kids would be taken to juvenile hall for teaching that very important life lesson. If you want to blindly blame someone for the obesity problem, blame the bleeding hearts that have preached self acceptance. I learned my lesson, so I don't feel that it's okay for the government to tell me what I can eat.

If you will re-read that statement I edited it to include the people who allow it to happen, I did this after I posted and re-read it because I thought it sounded to one sided.

I blame (if 'blame' is the right word) the public that allows it to happen, the industries that pander to it and the people who think someone else is responsible.

That comes across to me as a much more reasonible argument now.
Again, you have to understand that my major concern is government regulation of choice. If it's okay for the goverment to decide what I can and can't eat, what else is it okay for them to dictate?

This is my 2 cents.
'Its not the jeans that make my butt look fat, its the FAT that makes my butt look FAT'
One of the reason that may contribute to this is cause I set down and order 2 for 1 on tuesdays from our local pizza place and play CoH all night. Are these people responsible? hmmm....let me think, nope no gun to my head.

I don't know if my thoughts will help or flame more people up but here goes.
Yep... I very much don't like the government or anybody else for that matter dictating anything to me. That being said what you are talking about are 2 different things.
No pop in schools... Dictated by the government... Aren't most children educated in public and therefore government schools anyway? Before you answer... YES they are. And no an arguement of "All my friends..." doesn't change that. So removeing pop from schools is actually the government saying that during the hours of the day they are responsible for peoples children they will not make available things that many parents want to at least limit with their children. Seams like a good plan to me. Seams like the exactly same good plan as I expect when my daughter is buying her lunch at school that the school has put in a little time and energy makeing sure that the whole lunch is good for her or at least not bad for her. Does that mean she never gets soda and potato chips? No. But she does not get soda and potato chips every day even if that is what she really really wants.
I say good job government for takeing a little responsibility for what my child eats while she is their responsibility.
The other is regulating the private sector food estabishment. If they are saying "Can only provide smaller portions." Very very bad. I doubt that is the case. If they say "Must provide healthier alternatives." Even if that includes measurable things like % of menue or max calories per food value, that's a good thing. Know why? It's not limiting your choices... It's makeing more choices available. You may not want the fruit cup. So personally having the fruit cup isn't an increase of your choices. But the fries are not gone. You still have the choice you want. But if you would rather have the baked potato, the fruit cup, the bottled water instead of pop, or whatever choices there may be... then your choices ARE increased.
Myself personally, sometimes I will go in and get the "healthier" choices. There are some pretty good things of those choices at various fast food places. Or last night I was in a "mood" and got the 10 pack of chicken nuggets and the biggest shake McD would give me. Bottom line is just because the choices that are added aren't things any specific person wants, does not mean they aren't things that some person wants. Please take a good look and objectively decide, is the government dictating a reduction of choice or an increase of choice. One is bad, the other good. Don't confuse them.

You make some very good points, Dyvel. However, you're only looking at the now...You aren't looking into the future. Allow me to make a comparison that's completely ridiculous, but shows you exactly where I'm coming from: When the Germans militarized the de-militarized zone after WWI, the world allowed it. The world allowed this to happen because they felt that it was a small sacrifice that would cull the appetite of the Germans. The same can be said for government regulation of food choice. Right now, they're only "recommending" that restaurants make these changes - changes which might come at a large expense to smaller business, thus decreasing the liklihood that they'll be able to stay in business for an extended period of time. However, if Americans continue to tip the scale, what then? Maybe the FDA decides that there's a cap on portion size of every meal across the board. Maybe the FDA decides that certain ingredients are too detrimental to the health of the consumers. I'm worried that this is the beginning of something that will quickly spiral into an endless string of regulation. Many people will sit back and say that it's not a big deal. Hell...It might be a step in the right direction. That is until a regulation limits something that they enjoy.
As for the soda, I agree that it's a good idea that children shouldn't drink soda while in school. However, what were the parents doing to ensure that it wasn't an issue before the government had to step in and do something about it? Why aren't the parents held responsible for the weight of their children instead of Coca Cola and Pepsi? Why do these corporations, that have catered to the desires of Americans for amazing spans of time, have to lose capital because parents let their children weigh as much as a full grown adult?

ROFL! Did you just equate portion size at fast food restraunts to the military aspects of early 20th century germany???
There is probibly nobody here more concerned in your personal rights than me... It's actually part of my job, in RL. But regulation of healthier options at your local Jack-in-the-box is not going to lead to WWIII.
I doubt it will ever happen that somebody tries to stop a person who wants to eat a big mac from eating one. Well over time it may not be called a big mac anymore but that's beside the point. In the end did prohibition work out? Somethings really can't be regulated.
What you are defending is your right to make choices even if they aren't what someone else, or even common sense, considers good ones. If it's really important to someone to make a bad choice I bet they always will be able to one way or another. Things like this being discussed here are to make sure that you do have alternate choices and aren't stuck with the bad choice as the only choice. Even that is way over simplified but still the esential idea is there.
And this all said, I do agree with you that there are ALOT of places that the government is that they don't belong. In reality I am no big fan of government at all, big or little. A very wise man who's name I won't drop once said to me, "Absolute power does not corrupt absolutely, power attracts the coruptable." Which pretty much sums up my opinion of every government official, elected or not.
It's just that removeing pop from public schools and requireing restraunts to offer alternatives to high calorie, high carb, high fat foods is very unlikely to be step one to a scarry future.
Oh did I mention I live in Washington? One of our latest laws is the smokeing ban... No smokeing in public places. No smokeing in public buildings (meaning buildings where the public goes... even if private property) No smokeing within so many feet of doors, windows, or vents of buildings. Now I'm no smoker but I can both see and theorize how that just doesn't and isn't going to work. And that too isn't leading to WWIII. In fact at some future point I'm pretty sure people are going to be talking about how stupid that plan was, not unlike we talk about prohibition.

Oh, specifically answering the question in the title...
In fact I miss the word "Supersize." It completely cracks me up that some idiot businessman thinks "value size" "Biggie size" "large size" or "up size" is somehow percived as different than "supersize." Even I don't think the public is stupid enough to think that because it's called "value size" is has fewer callories than if it's called "supersize."
And McD's french fries are really not too good for you... But they are good... And sometimes I want a few more 8) Sometimes I even let my kids have a few more. Makeing me both a good mom and a bad mom at the same time 8)

The supersized meals were much, much larger than any of the meals currently offered in the major fast food chains. The size difference was so considerable that I actually started laughing the first time that I was handed a supersize cup at McDonald's. I was livid when McDonald's took the size away in response to that ridiculous documentary. If you're too stupid to understand that excessive amounts of fast food is bad for you, then I'm surprised that your friends don't have to remind you to breathe. :P
Soooo...I'm pretty much done with this topic. I'll wait in the shadows until the madness continues further, and then I'll jump back on with an "I told you so." Thanks for participating, folks.

I do think it was good that they took the sodas out of the schools. There is still plenty of access to that and other junk food out of the school environment, but at school, parents aren't around to help young people make the right choises. At least in the home environment, they have the opportunity to do some parenting, and help their children learn to make the right descisions about their diet.
Now, whether or not they do that at home is a whole nother discussion.
When I was growing up, I didn't have sodas or candy allowed in the house. I still got them, but it was closely monitored by my parents(mom.......). We had plenty of grapes and plums and apples, or whatever fruits and healthy snacks we requested within bugetary reason. We also never ate the purchased school lunches. Mom packed it untill we were old enough to pack our own. Kids don't need to have money at school, it's school, not the mall, not Mikkey D's. I know that some households are very hectic, so having the option to buy lunches is a requirement. So, yes in that case they do need money at school to do that.
But when there is a lack of ability for parents to "parent" in that environment, there only needs to be healthy choises to choose from. Parents think it's OK for their children to have all the sodas and junk food they want, feel free to keep it stocked up at home. That is your parental right. (Still not a good idea, but for the discussion's sake).
Forcing restaraunts to reduce portions by some goverment mandate is just stupid though. That will not teach common sense. People will have to learn to have some friggin self control. I regularly frequent restaraunts that have oversized portions. I feel that I get my money's worth. The trick is........The doggy bag! Hell yeah I want to see a mountain of food in front of me after spending $10-$20 bucks on it. I know I'm going to get full on that tonight, and will have a nice tasty lunch tomorrow. I don't feel any challenge to sit there and eat it till I'm gorged. unfortunately, others do not have such self control.
The problem in a stressfull society is that food makes us feel good when everything else in your life might make you feel like crap. Comfort foods are just that. Unfortunately, once you get overweight, you feel bad about that too, so lets have a hambone with mashed taters and I'll feel good for "Right now". It's a horrible spiral to escape for so many.
I don't like goverment intervention into things like this for reasons stated....Demolition Man, 1984..... I feel it's just a stop gap attempt that will fail to address the real problem with obesity in this country. Smaller portions do not make smarter people. It will also not make more motivated people. If they don't get their food fix at he restaraunt in one serving, they'll just order more appetizers or eat again when they get home.
I've had trouble with my weight since I was a little kid. Always had to shop in the "husky" section. I'm fighting it right now. (Spending a little too much time playing video games......not enough hiking....) But, I do try to keep up the good fight. I'm going for a nice hike tomorrow morning.
These are just my opinions on the subject. Also not meant to offend. I just hope some take it to heart, because being unhealthy in your later years is just painfull. It's all about you. This post is a little long winded because I feel kinda strongly about this. It's very important to take care of yourself. For those of you that can eat whatever you want and then exercise it off. ROCK ON! If you can do it, enjoy it while you can. Just be prepared when you hit the mid 30s and your metabolism takes a nose dive. At that point no ammount of exercise will work it all off, you will have to eat smarter. So why not start now?
On a final note...... Don't think Diet sodas are good for you. Look up some of the side effects of Nutrasweet(Aspertaime). You're better off drinking regular sodas in moderation. Plain old sugar in moderation is better than some of these chemical replacements.

i myself agree with malady 100%
when i was younger i was kinda chunky and in result i was made fun of ALOT. I ate alot of food and i never did anything. Now i realized the error in my ways. I also discovered that Lacrosse is really fun. So as it turns out im one of the stronger kids in my grade and no longer have a weight problem. My answer to overweightness is
a) watch what you eat (those health people arent complete idiots)
and b) if u do want to eat work out/exersice the food off. to this day i eat all the crap i want and never have a weight problem and other people eat less than me and they still do

In Britain there is a free, national health service paid for by taxes (the NHS). Coming on TV shortly is a documentary about Fat Tax - Whether obese people should pay for their treatment unlike everyone else.
The reasoning is that the obese people put extra strain on an already floundering system struggling to keep up with increasingly ridiculous government targets. As it is paid for only by taxes, which have to be spent elsewhere too (I won't get into an Iraq debate), the NHS can't keep up with this added strain.
I think it is good in some ways and bad in others. It does take the medical attention away from people who contracted proper illnesses and couldn't have done anything about it. The obese patients could have.
If you take this view though, you could say that those who have destroyed their liver with drink also must pay extra for treatment - they chose to smoke. The cancer sufferers didn't choose to get a fatal disease. This could also be said about smokers or even children pratting around and breaking their legs - it was their choice to take the risk.
That, of course, would be ridiculous.
What do you think?

I think everyone here is mising Maladay's point, and I think he's getting a little frustrated about it. The point is the government is trying to control what we eat. And i for one agree with him. They should butt out. I know that either side of the politcal fence thinks in extremes and I've always been a middle of the road person myself. But this situation is crossing the line to one extremest side.
One point I want to hit on here is that several people on here keep saying that the gonvernment insisting on fast food places offering healthy alrternatives is a good thing, you should have them. Well, you know you always have. Subway comes to mind. You want to eat healthy go to subway. Don't tell me the high calorie fast food place has to chaneg becasue all the health nuts are too lazy to go to the healtheir eating place. Helth nuts too lazy? Talk about a double standard.
And before you knock malady's analogy (say that 10 times fast), keep in mind gonvernment control of the people is what created this country in the first place. King george dictating to the people what they could and couldn't beleive/think/do is what they fought for way back when. And they intended for it to stay that way. I'm sure he got as far as he did because so many people said "oh it's just a little thing, we can deal with that and it's for our on good."
If the government wants to interfere to prevent other people from violating my rights, ie. attacking me, stealing from me, etc, then fine that what they are there for. But when they interfere with my own right to choose for myself what I want to do with myself, they have crossed the line into potentially tyranical activity. And that is definitelty not acceptable, period. I'm an adult, I can choose just fine for myself, and if I choose wrong I have no one to blame for it but myself. I already have parents, I don't need another one telling me what to do.

soft drinks are allowed in schools but u cannot buy them from the school. if u really wanted a soft drink you could bring it yourself. Also some schools refrain from allowing soft drinks to be sold because kids get hyper. Honestly all they are saying is that if the school serves them ppl will buy them. If sum1 sells a huge burger pepople will buy it and eat it ALL. This is why the government is setting limits. But this is only one step next they might ban soft drinks entirely then TV, video games( i hope not) and fast food.
I read a book for school called after where a school shooting takes place so all the schools slowly turn into a dictatorship. I think this is unlikely but still i see your concern

Okay. Everyone's said a lot, much of which I agree with, so I'll keep this brief.
Sodas in schools: When I was in school, there was one soda machine for students at the high school and nothing at any other school. At my oldest's intermediate school, there's a bank of three of them in the cafeteria. I want soda machines the heck out of the lower schools until my kids are old enough to grasp that tastes good does not equal drink it all the time. I have a hard enough time fighting this battle at home without the kids getting sodas at school with no problems.
As for government regulations of serving size? Please. This is dumb and it must stop. Instead of getting a junior mini-meal, Joe Consumer will just buy an extra burger or two to go along with his junior mini-meal. It's a stupid idea that won't work for crap.

One last point, then i'm out of this thread and no flaming intended or inferred...
We don't think about disaster preparedness until we have a disaster, we don't think about childrens safety until we have a school shooting, or the installation of metal detectors because of school crime then its all over the news... we don't really consider terrorism a threat until it hits home, we are a lazy lot and i'll bet you money that until the government decided to do this we didn't even think (en mass) it was wrong to have soda and McDees in schools, now we are all flustered... well tough poop...
It's not going to end the world, we are not going to wake up to Orwell's 1984, we are not suddenly going to lose the right to breath... many would have you believe this but it's just not so...
I don't like government intrusion/intervention either, but...
WE all had our chance and WE dropped the ball, now get over it, at least someone is stepping up to the plate to make a difference and that's more then many are or were willing to do...
We lose and give up our rights all the time and often with our consent...
The Right to privacy for example... There but pointless...
Cell phones/WiFi etc. - Strangers hear your conversations and wireless communications can be intercepted by anyone with a reciever.... yet we blab away and transmit data obliviously...
Crime data bases, Credit Histories and Reports etc.
Reality is not nice...
Become Pro-Active, start a petition, publish a story in a Newspaper wake people up to a problem or issue before someone else does... make a difference... don't just get political when someone else does... but be the first...
...Or be left holding the bag with no one to blame but yourself...
(Thank you to Malady for taking a stand, more people need to)
Ask yourself this question at the end of the day and be truthful with the answer... "Are you a follower, a leader or procrastinator?"
--peace out

Good points, everyone...
Sodas Taken out of school? could be fine, i guess, i only bought one like once a month i dont think ill miss it too terribly much...
on the same note, its story time. come here and sit on sunshine's lap.
I have a friend, and im glad she doesnt play video games and therefore wont be reading this, but she is fat. She admits it, everyone knows it, nobody really makes fun of her for it, but its unhealthy and she knows it. So what did she end up doing about her weight problem? nothing. she still eats the one or two disgustingly unhealthy school burgers/mazzio's pizza that is offered at our school. she will drink one coke a day, sometimes two if she has the money and feels like it. she knows better, its just that she doesnt care. And at this moment in time, she is not fat enough for it to be a big health problem, but in about ten years when her metabolism slows down, she is going to expand and develop a myriad of health problems as a result. i feel bad for her, and try to help her, but she gets offended at me and clams up. And yes, she is a "comfort eater".
Personally, i eat healthy half the time, and the other half im extremely conscious. i'll eat the occasional deepfried cheese, or burger, but ordinarily im eating my mom's home cooking that is and always has been, for since i can remember, about 2/3 fruits and vegetables. so, i love fruits and veggies and my statement is this: EAT MORE OF THEM! i grew up thinkin that that was the normal american dinner, then i remember goin to my dads house and i thought "theres no veggies in my dinner" then i thought "i dont think ive ever had veggies with him..." and i have researched and found that most people dont in fact eat them very often.
AMERICANS (AND OTHERS): EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGGIES! it wont cure ur weight issues (if u do in fact have them) but it is a way to begin gettiung urself on the right track.
i dont excersize much, and ill admit it. ordinarily, im playing CoH for 10 hours at a time, but once in a blue moon ill get the urge to take a bike ride, and ill go for about 5-6 miles at a very good pace (ask starwolfe, i used to drag him along). I walked about one or two miles to all of my classes each day in school (no joke, my school is a very spread out place). then add an extra mile if i decided to walk home.
now then... the reason im so skinny: my metabolism can run circles around the flash. its goin to slow down, i accept that and am goin to try to ween myself onto more healthy options.
Peace.

This one statement is probably the best example of how the weight issue can be resolved. If you grow up eating fruit and vegetables, and you drink water the majority of the time, then it's less likely that you'll have health issues later in life. You'll enjoy the things that keep you healthy. I also think that schools (kindergarten through high) should implement a physical training regiment that's followed strictly. I don't mean dodgeball or flag football. I'm talking about exercise...Something that isn't competition. Since I'm without an ounce of athletic prowess, I always shied away from athletic competition. When I got older and started training heavily, I realized that I could be bigger, faster, and stronger had I been introduced to the activities earlier in life.
By the by, this is just off the cuff...Not really in line with the "debate," but I thought it was worth a comment.
