I was strolling around the house thinking wow Im finally lev 30 and 60% to the big 50. I was thinking about ideas for different aspects for the game and then it hit me. I searched the forums of COH and didnt find anything about sidekick that resembled my idea. So hear it is...
What if when you reached a certain level you could do a mission/task force to earn a sidekick? Not a another hero permanently attached to you but a sort of NPC sidekick! The sidekick could only reach level 20 or so. They would be able to level just like you. They would have main and secondary powers but just on a weaker level than yours. You could choose make them a scrapper like you or controller with healing. They wouldnt gain influence just xp and you couldnt power level them. Say you choose one that causes damage. If you are level 30 and they are say 10. You hit an enemy for 100hp; at there level they would cause about 20-25 damage (Just enough). All normal rules would apply; death debt, no travel powers (but instd of reaching lev 14, being that they are lower max out, they could earn travel power at 4 and 10), and etc. This would add a whole new dimension to the game.
The mission to earn this SK could be something you can solo. Maybe you save a child/teen from some faction and then you as the payout they will be your SK. The mission could be tweaked to something a little better. I think this would be better than vehicles in the game or even PvP to an extent.
What do you all think?

That is a brilliant idea. I would love to see that added in a future update. (although I would perfer a monkey as a sidekick, I always wanted a helper monkey.) But seriously that would be awesome I'd rather see that implemented more than those Kheldians.

Now THAT is a great idea. Be tough to do though. What happens when you have this SK and want to SK someone on your team? I am sure it could be worked out but that would be alot of work to add that feature to the game. It wold be cool though.

I also think it would be cool if you could change the colors of your power effects. Like instead of blue energy blasts, have green or red. A blue flaming aura instead of red. Just a thought.

Something that could be done about having a human sidekick would be at sign on screen you could have the option to sign on with or without SK. If you signed on with you could still do the team thing but he would fill one of those 8 slots. Also that SK would increase enemy strength in missions. This isnt just a cosmetic aspect but it would make game harder. You always hear about people saying the game is too easy (not me) but this would add a genuine toughness to the game.
Remember how hard it is to get around when you have no travel power. Well say you get your sidekick at level 30; they have no travel power; darn now you have to start running through the city with them or else they might die. With this SK they dont get the benefit of fighting at your level. Now the boss wont directly attack them unless AOE or your dead and they are still standing there (it would be very tough to kill SK, it would be wrong for them to die 1st when your fighting a boss). Doing SK also would make people think more about builds also. You ever see someone with Group Fly (I havent seen it yet) but this would give a reason to use it; same for Group Teleport. You would have to adpot a whole new stategy to the game. Maybe take tatics as pool option because it would raise the accurcy and damage of your SK. Many cool options with this could be turned out.

I plan on depending on general response (which I didnt think would be bad) to submit this on COH forum under Suggestions and Ideas. Hopefully the Devs will catch it upon one of their reviews and maybe think about it in a later Issue. Be sure to check the Suggestion/Ideas for my post and see if it gets ripped to shreds by some of the sharks that frequent those waters. I use a variation of the same name on there as here.

actually that is supposed to be coming out in issue #4....
as for the sk idea the only problem would be the dying and acc problems a lvl 20 (let alone a lvl 1 or 2) would have w/ doing your missions with you... i know that at lvl 38 w/ Liz i barely hit lvl 43's unless i'm sked to one of them...
don't get me wrong if they could work out all the quirks and make them kinda like a pet ('cept different) they would be really cool... there are plenty of times that i would have loved to have some bait w/ me to save my fragile blaster's er... butt.

Thats the one thing that I dont think will fly. They will be looked at as pets. I can already see the the official forums lighting up already.. "Blasters are already getting unstopable now you think they should have pets" ... "An illusion controller with another pet? um yeah lets just get rid of teaming all together" and other nice comments like that you usually expect to find on the official forums. Like I said I love the idea but if you plan on posting it on the official forums be ready for a bar-b-que.

I considered the possibilty that everyone would think of them as pets but unlike pets these SK would be able to have more power options. To my understanding if you have a pet they only get certain powers. Like the Dark Servant can only do things like Tentacles and dark defender heal ability. This idea isnt something you can pick from your powers later in your career; its a task or a series of mission overtime that must be complete. Maybe a specific contact where you need to complete a story arc.
As for the issues of death and accuracy well that could be fixed to the point where even if they are fighting a villian on your level the SK would still be able to make contact. They would miss just as much as your hero. You would be able to level the hero. Even levels they could get power and odds get enanchment slots. Death would rarely occur. Most of the time the villians would pursue 1st and the SK 2nd. If not done that way evey battle your SK would die. Higher up enemies tend to use some AOE's. Two shots from any villian would wipe him out. They could give the SK a higher defense than any normal hero.
NOT A PET, ha ha.

Dont get me wrong I love the idea its very well thought out I have an illusion controller with pets and what your talking about is nothing like that but when you post this on the main boards more than likely the usually cavalcade of trolls will come out and argue that they are. Just /ignore them your idea is solid.

Interesting Ideas. I know the coding of such an option could be a bit tricky, but still a cool idea. They could have door missions where you have to save and then defend someone to the end run on the boss. I see the forums lighting up too. I know they wouldn't really be pets, but some IRL people I played with really whined about how powerfull the pets were on the controllers. But he just liked to whine alot because HE didn't have that power.
On sidekicks in general, and slightly different that the game generated one you were discussing, is the concept of the IRL character sidekick. It takes a real friend to play second fiddle to someones character. My example is Asphalt Mage. He was specifically designed to be a friend of mine's Sidekick. He runs with The Remarkable Mechanical Asmodeus, a Dark/Dark scrapper. With all of the character choises and builds available, I had a hard time choosing what to make at first, and it gave me a little direction on the character build. They really aren't good guys, but they have an agenda that makes taking down the bad guys beneficial to the "Master's Plan". Heroes souls just will not do!
I'm always sidekicked, but have gotten a little closer, 21 to his 26. I know he could power level me, but that's not the point. I'm there to augment him, and add effect to damage. I know when Asphalt reaches level 32, and the pets are available, I won't need to be anyone's sidekick, but it also helps me level him naturally. Right now I'm all about control and buffs. There isn't much damage available to me, so cruising with a good scrapper is like having my own personal pet already. Asmo is one of my best friends IRL, and got me started on the game, and this is his favorite Hero. So being his SK all of the time is no big deal, and I consider it an honor.
So, to you n00bs to COH out there, that might have friends as players. Be proud to be the sidekick.

I like that idea alot!!!
One of the things I sent to the development team was that flight needs to have another power slot called "sonic boom".
This would be a short burst of speed that eats up some end... the best part is that sonic boom would knock over the bad guys (like wirlwind).
right now, if you fly into a group of baddies, what happens... you stop, because they are standing there. so unless you're a kinetic with flight, there's no way to bowl for baddies.
I was thinking about this for a while and speed could also incorp sonic boom... hit the button and you knock back the groups.
Like the kinetics repulse you end would be eaten up by how many you knocked back.
anyway, I think the "duo" plan you laid out is a good one. I know I solo alot and would love to create a healer.
