I am recently fascinated by AoE attacks and effects. Problem is I don't where to even begin. What AT is good at that kind of thing? What powers are a must?

All ATs have a few AoE attacks. However, Spines (from Scrapper) has a few nice ones... lost of PBAoE and cones :)

spines scrapers and fire blasters are both very AoE dynamic.
you either want to make a scrapper (spines is definately best in AoE) to launch these attacks AND be slightly defensible, or make a blaster to have the AoE effects at range AND have very powerful melee attacks, some of which will also be AoE

I have a 41 Fire tank and his AOE is insane. I have combustion and fire sword circle. Now couple these attacks with firery embrace and BU and I rival a blasters nuke. But im not finished ..i will be dipping in the pyre epic for fireball (another AOE). So here it is..just b4 jumping into a mob..or after herding, pop fiery embrace then BU..then light them up with fireball, fire sword circle and fireball...MAX CARNAGE!!

I totally agree. Because of 'Conserve Power', Energy secondary is good to pair with fire as well. Fire seems to eat a lot of end.
I've also had a lot of fun with Sonic/Fire. The control effects Sonic offers pairs wells with the Fire secondary melee assaults.
Infernal Storm fire/energy/fire blaster
Cosmo Crush energy/energy/force blaster
and many more...

I'm assuming you're looking strictly for damage AOE's. Any of the ice sets for blasters, controllers and tanks have good slow and holding AOE's and the stone controllers have good immobilize and slowing AOE's.
For damage AOE's fire blasters are the king's of damage AOE's bar none. Unfortunately they also will draw aggro off of even a good tank with all that massive AOE damage and get your squishy blaster killed often. But they are the kings of AOE damage. The spine scrapper is the second best AOE damage dealer. And they have the toughness to survive it (usually) but they don't kill as fast as the blasters do. It's fairly close though. The fire tanks do have good AOE attacks. They are the best tank at damage dealing and they have the toughness to survive the retaliation. However, tanks are not made for damage dealing. They are the shields of the team, not the swords, so they're damage levels fall somewhat behind the blasters and scrappers.
So pick your favorite AT to play and try one of those.
