| COH updater not connecting |

|
so today every time i click the icon to start up i get an error message saying coh updater has encountered a problem and needs to close! is the whole thing down or is this a me problem?

We were up and running last night. I was online for quite a while. More than likely something became corrupt in your installation.
In your C:\Program Files\City of Heroes folder, there should be some sort of a checksum file. Try deleting that and restarting the CoH program. If that doesn't work, uninstall and install the product. The downside of this is that you're going to have to download the patches again, which will take some time.

still happening sad to say, if i do uninstall will all my charachters and my remaining game time on my card be lost?

No Characters are saved on the individual servers, and your time card stays active until the time runs out. Installing and unistalling will not effect your Characters or Account. These are both seperate also. You just need to reinstall, run updates and then log in like usual. You will only lose the files on your PC, so if you downloaded maps or something you may need to download them again, but other than that it just takes time. So don't worry about losing Characters or time from your account. Once you put in a time card its good for 60 days that you put it in. Good Luck, let us know if problems still occur.

yep the only downfall to uninstalling then reinstalling is you have to wait for everything to repatch (and there are some big patches)

I just got COH and im having the same problem, my updater just wont connect, all night it stays on "Checking updater" and ive done everything, firewall thing, checksum file, reinstalling it. does anyone have any ideas?

are you running on a slower internet connection b/c there are a bunch of patches that have to be downloaded when you 1st get the game and if you have a slow connection it will take a while to get it up and running

I'm having an issue along these lines, so if I could beg a moment of your time...
I'm very interested in joining the community in this game, but at the moment, I have no idea how it feels, what the engine is like, etc. This being so, I decided to try to take advantage of the CoV stress test this weekend. After 2 failed attempts from fileplanet, I finally finished the client download and installed it, but when I went to begin the game, the updater said it had experienced a problem and closed. The DL site mentionned having to have admin access to my network in order to run the CoV updater.
My main question now is whether or not I must have this same access to update City of Heroes as it currently stands. This is no problem for most players I would assume, in the home setting, as they control just about every aspect of their network. For me however, living in the dorms at my university, I have no such access. The admins have every sort of p2p transfers disabled or blocked.
I relate this here because I had a similar problem before with the WoW updater, and ended up having to disable the p2p transfer option on the updater to download the updates directly from Blizzard.
So....is the updater for COH, and the COV stress and beta tests also p2p based? If so, I'm dissapointed I won't be able to play in the dorms here ='( Thanks for any confirmed response.

hm...2:30AM and i live in the same suite in my dorms as the network admins....I'm real tempted to go throw a shoe at their door and start shouting port numbers at them through the wall >_>

I am having trouble with mine too now :S
It started when I got my CoV beta code and tried to thread for the test server. I uninstalled then and reinstalled last night then patched it over night. It worked fine this morning so I tried the threading one last time. Didnt work, uninstalled, reinstalled and am trying to patch now but now the patcher isn't doing anything it just says "connecting..."
Any help? :S

I just checked the server staus at the offical site and there was a topic about slow coh updater times to the l6 patch that is avialable to begin downloading....so the problem is on their end and they are aware of it

I cannot log into the game...I keep gettikng the coh updater which is frozen , and never completely updates...This game worked fine last night, so the problem must be thte update...
Someone in support sent me an email telling me to download EUROPEAN UPDATER...heh when I cant even get the other one to download...Why would I want European updater? Can someone tell me where this is located and how to download it..
The email they sent me, may as well have been written in Latin...Im am not a conputer nerd and was barely able to install this game in the first place...I just want them to have all the files I need at log in and for them to actually download...I dont want to have to go searching for them and then go on a wild goose chase to rename then and put them in a different folder....I would appreciate any help...The Game has not worked all day...Thank,s...Mar

I'm having the same problem as Cyborg was. I click on my desktop icon and it won't even start the updater, it just says that it has encountered an error and closes. I've tried all the common solutions that I've found- I reinstalled the game, I deleted that one file thingy, and I even updated my drivers. But I'm still getting the same error message, and I have for two days now. Frankly I'm sick of it... I could have avoided all this trouble by buying a subscription to my old SWG game, but my brother talked me into buying it. So now I've bought it on a whim, and it won't even work. If I can't get it to work this week I'm going to take it back and get a refund or store credits or something...
EDIT: Okay, going through the help files on the PlayNC main site, I found an article that confronted this problem called "Error: Cohupdater.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." However, it has a different ModName that they don't cover on the help file. It says ModName: hyperbarss3.dll
If anyone can help me with this, I'd appreciate it. I'm really tired of messing around with it and I'd just like for it to work.

Try this.
Browse to your C:\Program Files\City of Heroes folder.
Rename the CoHUpdater.EXE to something else...like CoHBackup.EXE.
Visit ftp://client.coh.com/US/ and download the file named 'cohupdater.zip'
Extract the new CoHUpdater.EXE into the C:\Program Files\City of Heroes folder.
See if that fixes it. If not, you might have to un/reinstall the game which will take a while because you'll need to repatch.

It still won't work... and I've tried reinstalling it, still the same problem. I can use it on our other computer, so I can still play; but generally this computer is my computer since no one else bothers with it, so I'd like to get it working on here...

You're PC is infected with spyware. Uninstall anything related to new.net or startnow from your add/remove list.
Download and run:
Webroot Spysweeper -or do a full scan if you already have a spyware scanner.

Your problem isnt with CoH itself its with Windows. You seem to have some malware which is affecting the programs that access the internet from your PC. The Hyperbar (hyperbar.dll) is a URL Search Hook or BHO toolbar that replaces your homepage and search settings in Internet Explorer, startnow.com sound familiar?
Anyway its more than likely it was installed manualy (Kazaa?) so first thing to try is to look in the Add/Remove Program Files list for any toolbars or anything related to new.net or startnow. If you cant find it listed download http://www.new.net/support/uninstall6_38.exe and run the program.
Once you've done that either update your old or download a new spyware remover (I recommend webroot spysweeper) then run a full scan of your PC.

after many emails back and forth to support, I was finally able to update the file, by briely unplugging the modem from the back of the computer...It is still stuck though, as my husband could not unplug it. But he unplugged it long enough for it to lose connection...however he didnt think he did...mar

Im not really sure of your problem or what support told you but you may want to flush your DNS cache instead of trying to unplug the modem.
Do the following:
1. Click Start, Click Run, in the box type: CMD
hit enter.
2. In the commmand promt type: ipconfig /flushdns
hit enter.
*Dont know if this will fix your problem but its worth a try. If you can post some more info about it and Ill try to help.

Been there, done that. We actually have two spyware removal programs that we run and update regularly, so all threats were eliminated before I even tried anything else. Spyware isn't the problem.

Technicaly StartNow HyperBar gets added as a bundle with another program it usualy doesnt show up with some spyware removers.
"ModName: hyperbarss3.dll" means that it is still on your PC and untill this is removed CoH wont work due to the DNS conflict.

Gives a run down of what that DLL actually is. It CAN cause problems and should be properly removed.

What I can say...The same problem
And I see "connecting"....."connecting"...And nothing else. I have turn off all firewalls, now i try the trick with Spy Sweeper..Mayby it will help...

Wow, cool picture. Looks completely different from my screen. But that has nothing to do with your problem. But I can still welcome you to GameAmp. At least you found our site. Every cloud has a silver lining :)
I am not really tech savvy. So I am a bit clueless to what could be your problem. Did it start giving problems today, or are you a new player, and this is your first time to try to log in?
