RE: Empathy/Psychic Blast

First... Welcome to the site Mystique_Jol!

second... I am not sure if a defender is the best first player to start with. Unless you have played MMORPG before (which I assume you have judging by you ability to use the planner), and you have been a healer in those other games.

I say this only because the defender is not the high damage dealer and can't take lots either. So to learn the basics of the game, it might be wise to start with a scrapper or blaster.

That being said...

Third... Here is my normal build for my Empathy/? defenders.

Level 1: healing Aura and first selection of secondary power.

Level 2: Heal Other.

Level 4: Absorbing Pain

Level 6: Recall Friend or Ressurect

Level 8: the other you didn't take at level 6

Level 10: Fortitude

Level 12: Air Superiority (I take as a second attack instead of Hover)

Level 14: Flight

This is a pretty normal build for my healers. I choose Recall friend and resurrect early because it comes in very handy to get to a safe location, then teleport your teammates to you and then resurrect them.

Also, you can now get a temporary jet pack doing the bank missions around level 6 or 7, when you are in King's Row (one of the zones). That should last until you get to level 14 when you can get your actual travel power.

The great thing about City of Heroes, is that you can make most every build work and succeed if you take the time to learn how to best use that character.

We can give you our thoughts, but you do what you want... it is your game and characters...

RE: Empathy/Psychic Blast

First off, welcome to Gameamp and the game.

Second, you chose what is probably the most 'difficult' of defenders to play in this game. I say difficult only because it is rather difficult to do any effective soloing with an emp defender past the early teens. If you've played a pure healer in any other MMOs, you know what I mean already.

As to your build, it looks good in that you took pretty much every power in the emp set, but there are a couple of things I would do differently.

One is that you are going to want to get Hasten from the Speed pool. Recharges are fine in the powers but every little bit helps when you are trying to keep everyone alive and kicking. Once I learned the benefits of having Hasten, I don't think I've made a hero or villian that doesn't have it.

Any other changes really depend on your playstyle. If you plan to do any soloing, I would get a second attack and the snipe earlier in the build. Also, I'm not a fan of the Leadership pool in general, so I would probably leave those out myself. As far as Recall Friend goes, I would agree with Swiss about getting it earlier rather than later, though my emp doesn't have it at all and not planning to get it. I also went with leaping instead of flight on mine, but that's just a part of the way I play him since I plan to get acrobatics as soon as I can fit it into the build.

Like I said earlier, it all deepends on your playstyle, and these commments are just my opinions. Your best bet is to just start experimenting and find what you like playing best, and if you are like most of us, it will lead to numerous alts. Altoholics Anonymous meets just down the hall if you feel the need....

RE: Empathy/Psychic Blast

Thanks for the replies. :)

A friend of mine is playing this game, and actually I've tried this combo on his account, and I think I can handle it.

When I saw him play, he was doing the last mission from Talshack the Mystic, and from what I saw he could have needed the knockback protection from Hover. He was being kicked around from the Ruin Mages, as he was going with the Air Superiority.

When it comes to Recall Friend I don't know how to get any room for it, as I want Flight for my defender.

But if you can modify my build, or make a better one, feel free to post it. If it looks better, I might go with that one. :)

RE: Empathy/Psychic Blast

i would suggest not getting the fitnss pool. i know almost everyone swears by stamina, but as an empath, you just dont need it. emps dont use much end, because most defenders don't, and the only toggles youll be running would be leadership, which are fine with just one -end cost in each. by the way, i strongly reccomend keeping leadership. defenders give out the best bonuses from the set, and that helpls the team a lot without you really even trying. also on the not of not needing stamina, you even get the +recovery from RA later on. without fitness, you will also be able to get recall friend, and maybe even go for teleport to get to your allies quickly. if you do that, the resulting third slot from dropping fitness could be used for whatever prerequisite for flight you did not get. or whatever else you want. basically, there are several build that done need stamina, and empathy defenders are high on the list.

Just wanna note that Fortitude is not available till level 12 for an empathy defender. And in my opinion, Resurrect is not nearly as important early on as Clear Mind. Clear Mind, when combined with Heals, will help to prevent unnecessary deaths. Prevention is always greater than reaction.

RE: Empathy/Psychic Blast

Warron has some good points... I tend to find that the Healing Aura clears up many of the mez'ed group, so I have always waited on clear mind. Personal opinion I guess.

I wasn't sure when Fortitude was 10 or 12. I switch the 2 then Fortitude and Air superiority.

Also I like to set up binds for the heal other power to the number pad keys.

So I hit the number 1 and it will do a Hael Other on Teammate #1.

and so on...

When I get home I will post the bind for those... unless someone knows them now.

/bind numpad 1 "powexec_name Heal Other"

I think that should work.

ack I forgot to target the team mate lemme get back with the new bind.

/bind numpad 1 "target_custom_ Teammate 1$$powexec_name Heal Other"

I think this one will work. I never had to target a team member with one before.

i just go to keymapping and make the numpad 1-8 target the teammates, and bind numpad0 to heal other. this way, i can target them without necessarily needing to use my heal other, in case someone else needs it in a jiffy.

RE: Empathy/Psychic Blast

I just wanted to thow in my two cents about the stamina power. I found it invaluable.

I usually run with my SG and they love tanks and scrappers. They also love running on invincible. I usually don't get to see the action in big fights as I just watch the team's bars and click like there's no tomorrow.

I never really ran out of end a lot, but I like the idea of never ever running out even if I do a lot of other stuff than heal.

The toon he wants to build looks like it'll be doing some croud control (mass hypnosis) and wants the leadership toggles. That will suck up some end for sure. I think it really does matter on his play style too.

That's just my take on it, though.

RE: Empathy/Psychic Blast

I just hit 24 with my dedicated healer, and I've never had any issues with Endurance at all. But then, I'm also not attacking with anything more powerful than Neutrino Bolt.

I took, as power pools, Teleport for Recall Friend, at lvl 8, Flight, for Hover and Fly, at lvl... something, I don't remember, but hover is great for healers to stay above the fighting safely and still see where everyone is. Fly allows you to get to people on other levels quickly and efficiently.

Medicine is good for pure healers, and sometimes controllers (if they can keep from getting hit by using their pets), but not much use otherwise. However, it gives Emps a 4th heal, 2nd CM, and 2nd Rez, which is VERY nice in a group on a high-dif mission.

I'm thinking of getting Hasten from the Speed pool as my 4th pool to help speed my RAs and Rezzes recharge. If not that, then Leadership for the team buffs. I'm leaning towards Hasten, though.

For a fighting Emp, however, I'd probably replace Medicine with Fitness or Leadership late-game, and have hasten around the early 20's for your RA recharges.

Your mastery choice is good, but if you find yourself having endurance issues, Electric's Power-Sink is amazing. I have it on my lvl 50 elec blaster and it's just plain incredible right after using my nuke. It comes late to the Defender, so I'd only suggest it if you respec your psy-mastery out.

I'd trade Psi Mastery for Energy Mastery.

Power Buildup + Fortitude = WIN!

Power Buildup will also increase your heals for a short time. If someone is REAL low, a PBU + Heal Other will give them a nice heal.

That's very true. I might go for Power Mastery when I hit Epic Proportions for Power Build-Up, if only to make some really crazy heals and buffs. It's a strong option if you want to focus on buffing and healing at higher lvls.

Just want to add that the thought of a Power Built Up Fortitude and Adrenalin Boost makes me *drool*. I may need to change my underwear if I ponder this too long.
