Blaster Travel Power

I have level 11.5 energy energy blaster, at 12 i plan on getting the first part of his travel power. I am undecided between Super Speed of Fly.

Super speed because I would also get hasten to help recharge my powers faster.

Fly because i can get from place to place safely, and i can use hover for a defense buff. But since i have melee attacks i don't want to turn hover off his a guy, and then turn it back on.

I am still open to all the power sets, but those are the two i am leaning towards.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

I don't like Super Speed as a travel power myself, (I keep running into things) but Hasten is nice. Luckily you don't need to take the travel-power itself to enjoy Hasten.

Fly is nice, but as defensive powers go, I'll take Combat Jumping over Hover. Unless you want to use Hover to stay out of Melee distance and be a flying duck for everything with Ranged powers. But in that case, you'd be under-utilizing your melee powers. That's why I tend to ignore Hover as a defensive power. It does protect a bit, but not much and you're very likely to end up slotting it for speed & end-drain reduction.

Maybe someone can prove me wrong with statistics, but as far as practical defenses from travel-powers go, CJ has the edge. because it allows for both melee and ranged combat without making you stick out in a group.
I really love Super Jump. It gets me wherever I want to go, the entertainment value of hopping into a mob and being gone a second later while traveling places never tires and unlike both Flight and Super Speed it doesn't become awkward in small, confined places such as office or cave maps. Well, CJ doesn't. Full Jump gets you a sore head, I concur :-)

The very few times you may want flight over jump are when you can get by on either left over temporary travel-powers, the GvE jet-pack or a mate's Recall Friend.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

For blasters I'm a fan of flying because it gives you the opportunity to hover over the battlefield selecting your targets and staying out punching range. As for hasten I say live without it for a while. One of the biggest challenges for low level blasters is endurance management...trying to kill stuff before the DoT has had a chance to work or your teammates have added their part. Being able to shoot off powers faster means running out of juice faster. Recharge times allow you to pace yourself a little better at lower levels. That way the team isn't always waiting on the blaster.

Plus I believe hasten is back loaded on it endurance charge. That means it will most likely wear off when you need the endurance the most. for my lvl 50 scrapper I picked up hasten at lvl 49.

As for superspeed, there are maps where it is just a pain such as Terra Volta.

Just my thoughts.

Randy

One thing to keep in mind is that on a blaster, with fly you can shoot baddies from a height and not get hit. When you get those annoying mishes in hollows to kill Igneous when your level 12 and they start at 14 or 15, it's nice to be able to snipe them dead from high up and get through it alive without dying. Just a thought.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

I agree with what Starwolf said. Blasters are my favorite AT and i have made a couple of them and I've tried each travel power on blasters.

Flight is by far my favorite travel power for a blaster. When it's you vs. and melee opponent it's great to be able to fly high and snipe where they can't get you. Also its pretty quick so on big map missions i find it useful for pulling large groups. Snipe a couple of different groups then fly back to your team before they all kill you.

Having super speed on during a battle really doesn't have it's advantages and super jump is only good for getting away a little quicker if your in a trouble during a fight.

If you really don't want to get fly than i would suggest teleport. A lot of people don't agree that blasters should have teleport, but blasters can often find themselves in a tight spot and teleport is the fastest way to get away from a fight.(but only if you really need to) My lvl 20 ice blaster has been saved many times from using teleport.

But overall i think flight would be the best choice for a blaster.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

I have an energy-blaster myself.
So I know about using some blappertactics...but...
wait for some nasty hard hiting melee foes (most likly Redcaps!) and you will gladly ignore your own meleeattacks in favor of hovering above them.
Hover is sometimes my only chance to win a fight versus some bosses or elite-bosses, cause it keeps me out of range of their most devastating attacks.

I went the hover - fly route on my nrg/nrg blaster. Although I am a fan of knockback, not all teams are. With hover you can get above the mobs and turn the knockback into a pseudo knockdown.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

Sorry for making your decision harder, but I think SuperSpeed is the ideal travel power for a blaster. First of all it is the fastest travelpower. But that is just added bonus. The real beauty shines inside missions. None of the other travel powers are really useful inside a mission. But as blaster you often and quickly get way over your head in enemies. You can superspeed-zip away before you drop dead. Also, as blaster you are probably going to get invisibility/stealth. Together with superspeed you can zip through maps and grab, or at least locate, the glowies.

The only disadvantage of superspeed is that you have no vertical movement. But the raptorpack, zero-g jetpack and maybe goodvevil jetpack will easily last you till level 50 for the few times you need to go vertical.

On top of this all, since you will take hasten regardless of anything else, you basically save TWO powers spots by going superspeed. That means two more attacks. And that is what a blaster is all about. Doing damage.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

Personally I use Super Jump for the reason of Combat Jumping and Acrobatics. I know the buff from CJ isn't all that much but it helps prevent being Immobilized, and Acrobatics for the Knockbacks.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

I'm a big fan of Super Speed on all my characters. Paired with Combat Jumping and Hurdle, there isn't much that gets in my way, travel-wise. The things that do, can be overcome by the Jump Pack or the GvE Jump Pack.

That being said, it's a matter of taste really. Some folks swear by Flight, just because of how easy and safe it can be. Only a few of my characters have had Flight, only because they had another form of +flight speed in Quickness or Lightning Reflexes, because Flight is too slow for my taste. :p

RE: Blaster Travel Power

I've been a big fan of flight and concealment for my blasters/defenders and use hover/stealth to get the defense and hover takes care of knockback issues as well. Hover ends up slotted with 1 end red, 2 fly, and 3 defense SOs and in the later 20s I was able to hover all the time and stay with my running team. Stealth lowers your movement speed but at 50 you're able to run both and keep up to speed without running sprint.

As a side note, with my fender I also followed the concealment route to get phase shift which was a great way to 'phase out' when the team drops around you and survive to tp/rez and get everyone back into action.

Hope this helps
Nas :)

RE: Blaster Travel Power

I may get flamed for this, but, why not both.

Fly/Hover is nice for all the above reasons. This was my initial blaster travel set up.

I snagged Hasten in my late 20s only after I got Stamina slotted.

I then found myself wanting to try out SS somewhere in my 40s. I liked it. Very fast and fun and only really useful for scooting across zones and maps IMO.

And I still have Fly/Hover to get up and out of harms way, for travel or combat operations.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

My input, having 2 blasters at 50, both with a bunch of melee attacks, is to go with leaping, for the combat mobility of CJ and the protection of Acro. It's hold protection is strong enough to stave off a single enemy hold, which can be handy, since you are likely going to be aiming for taking out that one enemy ASAP anyway. If the alpha attacks don't kill the one with the hold, you have a little extra protection to give yourself time to follow it up and take him out. Very useful against Rikti Mentalists and such. And the knockback protection is immensely useful, especially when alot of melee oriented opponents use knocks frequently.

CJ's immob protection is huge, such that you'll never really need to worry about being Immobilized, which is really helpful when you have to run away from an opponent.

All that, and you get a pretty fast (faster than fly) travel power with enough vertical to get you around the city with no major issues. In fact, outside of the Shadow Shard zones, I have never come up against an obstacle in CoH or CoV that couldn't be overcome with Super Jump.

And Phe, hate to burst your bubble, but TP is actually the fastest travel power in the game. When used right, and especially when slotted for Range, nothing can keep up with it. Super Speed is second fastest, and somewhat a better choice, as it doesn't require as much endurance or skill as TP requires to be effective. If you ever want to test this out, we can meet with 50s on the test server, my Tank has TP and is always the first one to missions, no matter where they are. =D

W.P.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

Not much of a bubble to burst, WP. I believe you straight away.

I learned over the years that getting very fast from one mission door to the other is only relevant when you play solo. Otherwise you will always be waiting for the one person that needs to sell, or the one that zones slow, or whatever reason. And if the whole team happens to be fast there is always somebody that can tp you to the door.

And after reading all the arguments I actually agree that SJ is the way to go. Maybe I have been playing my stalkers too much. And maybe I just wanted to chirp in for the often under appreciated SS. CJ and Acrobatics are indeed really great to have. To be honest my top blaster (lvl 40) has SJ and no SS.

But I guess this whole thread shows once again the charms of COH. It doesn't matter what powers you pick as long as you as the player enjoy it. All powers can work. It is just up to the individual player to make them shine for them.

RE: Blaster Travel Power

Both my blasters have CJ/SJ/Acro and Hasten/SS. I love the melee safety of the Leaping powers, plus the fast movement on mission maps that Hasten/SS provides. How often can you really take advantage of SJ's height on a mission map? You end up with a hopping rabbit trying to move around with SJ on a map, while SS just glides around all smooth and casual. I really do love having both, it makes for great combat maneuverability.

W.P.

Got a 50 eng/eng blaster and was a big big fan of flight for all the reasons stated previously BUT...

I made the switch to CJ/SJ and man SJ is FUN and effective. The only thing I really miss is being able to snipe from above. And if you plan on doing any PvPing, super jump is better than flying especially when chasing down those "runners".

And did I mention Super Jump is FUN! :)
