From Matt "Positron" Miller's Fourth Anniversary Message:
| QUOTE | | I can’t tell you how excited I am for our game’s future, and although we have some major announcements yet to be made, one of the things I can talk about is a feature that we are planning. Similar in concept to our character creator, it allows you, the players, to create missions and story arcs for your characters and others to participate in. You’ll be able to pick the map, villain group, and objectives, as well as write the dialog and any clues needed for the missions. When you are satisfied with it, you can upload it and have other players across all servers play it and rate it. Fame will come to the players whose stories rate the best overall. It is features like these that we never dreamed of including when we first shipped, but are excited to be able to offer players very soon. |
It looks like roleplayers and storyline enthusiasts will be getting a new outlet.

Ok thats news worthy post. Instead of a forum post as the news, Submit a news story on that. A forum will always follow but I would love to see more CoH Ampers submit anything news worthy as news when they find them.
Remember, write in your own words and try not to quote directly.
On the topic, very cool. Sounds very interesting but I want to hear an announcement stating there will be a bigger, better CoH called CoH Duece!

They already did that. But that discussion has already been had I think.

not to be a downer, but wont this just make it easy to create your own farm? i really hope not. as much as i like farming so i can actually afford stuff, its pretty boring.
anywho, i am really excited to see the possibilities. this opens a whole new world for each character, and i know im tying my story arc into the background of my main character

200 Banished Pantheon masks have taken over City Hall. You have 120 mintues to defeat them all and save the City Representative, the SG Registrar and all the 1st level contacts.
Meanwile, you first level heroes should be in the sewers, recovering the 88 body bags (worth plenty of influence each) from the Vahzilok.

Should make getting badges for specific critters easier. I guess this means no more competition on the PI docks to see which team can cap the Fake Nemesis first.

i think it will be a easy way to get all the annoying (BP masks, carney badge) hunt badges. Unless you do the police band missions.

Grif,
I think your CoH2 is going to end up being an evolution of CoH1 via issues. Compare issue 1 and now. Pretty good improvements I would have to say...including graphics (I love seeing the big ball of leaves pets running around).

I expect this will only be on the test server, with a few chosen winners being launched later on live servers.
Our options will probably also be quite limited. As cool as it is in the regular missions, I just can't see them letting us make missions with a giant monster in them. A level 1 mission with a Carnie ambush on exit might be fun, though.

Maybe, if they've decided to blow up the whole archetype-origin system in favor of something cooler. And let current subscribers download the game for free. And maybe just transitioned everything over to the new game and turned the other one off (with subions and veteran rewards) just rolling over to the new system). I'm skeptical as to whether a whole new game could be any better than the continually updated one we have now, but there's some merit to starting over, and a "2" would probably generate sales and bring new players in.

Cool Idea
I'd say they will have limits on bad guy types linked to level.Same with rewards to stop people from setting a mission with enough xp to get level 50 with thier 1st mission.
People can set up their farmer misssion for solo play and stop annoying people and badge hunting will be easier for those into that.

Interesting what this blogger has to say about the announcement. He seems to think that in spite of City of Heroes being a relatively small game and this announcement being made with surprising nonchalance, that this development, if it works, could very well be the next evolutionary step in the entire MMO genre. "MMO 2.0", he calls it.

I wasn't going to say anything on this, but I see it coming up again and again. I think that maybe we should shed a little light on this all.
If you like CoH....leave it alone.
I started playing MMOs when Everquest 1st came out. I watched it develop over years and years. I was somewhere in my 8th year I think when they decided to make EQ II and the main people of EQ took off and started developing their own project called Vanguard. (Sound similar? )
So here were the results. A ton of people migrated to EQ II and were dissappointed with it. A bunch more waited for Vangaurd a few years later and it was a disappointment too. A bunch just threw up their hands and moved to WoW.
The original Everquest, even though it kept expanding and getting better and better, floundered. It went from being the monster of all MMOs to almost nothing. They combined servers to make the worlds more populated....nothing has worked to revitalize it. Lowered population means lowered revenue for expansion.
I finally let my characters in Everquest die and sought new pastures....CoX to be exact.
I don't want the same thing happening here as well. Revitalize the game, make it better, add new stuff, upgrade graphics, but PLEASE don't create a separate game that competes directly with it's original....It doesn't work.

I don't believe we have anything to worry about from this "choose your own adventure" mechanism. It has occured to me how the CoX dev team will probably implement this.
Rather than creating missions out in the game world or on the test server, they will probably give us another arena. Call it a "danger room," if you will. Missions in the "danger room" would be built by selecting options from a menu scructure similar to that in the arenas. There would be no XP, debt, influence, drops or normal badge work in custom missions, but there would almost certainly be a new set of badges which could only be earned in custom missions.

that does sound about right. i doubt they will allow free farms or anything like that. i just hope they put very many limits if this is the case. i always wanted a mish with several (5+) avs in it in one spot. after soloing the end of the lazarus tf, 3 just doesnt cut it anymore lol

i've always wanted them to implement something like the danger room thing X was talking about. if this could be placed in bases that would be extra sweet. maybe if they gave xp but like you could only do it a few times a day or something. it would be cool to be able to try out new combos and stuff without worrying about getting killed or failing missions.

I had wondered about that as well, as to how suddenly inviting thousands of writers wasn't going to really screw up continuity. I'd thought maybe something to do with Portal Corp and alternate universes, but I like your Danger Room idea a lot better.

So I could theoretically make a mission full of nemesis fakes, rikti monkeys, and paragon protectors? Wow... Bliss!
Imagine a warehouse full from side to side with level 1 of anything you needed for a badge! Like those terrible requirements for the MI illusionist pets.

I must be the only person I know, then, who saw the announcement and thought, "Oh, damn, I know EXACTLY what story idea of mine I'm turning into a mish... hell, mine could be a Task Force!"
I knew I was on the right track when two hours later, five other CoX-playing friends emailed me about it and said, "So, you want help creating Mender Anomaly's Task Force?"
How the devs are going to keep folks from nerfing this, I have no idea. Maybe they're going to have some submission thing and each month they make X missions/arcs/whatever available for people to play. The more successful ones are maybe made permanent, while the less successful ones get rotated out for newer content.

All in all it's quite brilliant. Most successful businesses on the net leverage user-generated content because then they get tons of work for free. And why not? It provides value to everyone (ex. Gameamp.com)

This is possible, but honestly I hope it's not the case. Positron said "Similar in concept to our character creator, it allows you, the players, to create missions and story arcs. . . ". When I read that, I imagined going into "Mission Creator Mode" and seeing a screen with several drop down menues, just like when you're creating a new character. You'll start with the basics, for example, choose Trial, TF, Story Arc, etc. . . Then select the details for your choice, and get more specific until you are writing the contact text for each mission.
And I imagine that to minimize farming exploits, there will be limitations of course. Once you select Story Arc > Level 25-30 > Main Enemy: Counsil > Mission Maps: A, B, C, D, . . . there will only be certain baddies you can choose from for each map, and limits on how many bosses, AV's, NPC's, Glowies, etc.
Of course, I've no idea how it will work, that's just how it played out to me when I read "much like when you create a new character".
And I don't see why not have the mission doors outside or on a train like they are now? I mean, I enter office buildings from cave doors all the time, why not spawn my Counsil map at the nearest coffee shop?

First of all Welcome back electraoutlaw!!!!!
Nice to see you again. It has been quite a while since you graced our hallowed halls, glad you stopped back in.
On topic... I have a feeling these will only be available on the test server or somewhere that would not count on the live servers or I see everyone making the missions they need to get the respective kill x number for badge...
Sounds cool for all of the former Gamemasters and Dungeonmasters out there. Gives them a taste of the power again.

On the one hand: indeed a big welcome back to Electraoutlaw!
On the other:
Player created content, such as that which I experienced heavily while playing Neverwinter Nights, is typically shoddy. Enterprising "module" creators start very strong, and the mid-point of a module is rather weak and the endings usually left a lot to be desired. However, there were always, and I mean always exceptions to the general rule. That being said, I hope we get a lot more of the "exception" than the "rule" when the new creator goes live.
