So today one of my co-workers starts talking to me about Champions Online coming out in August. We talked about some of the upcoming changes it brings (like no archtypes) and how there are supposed to be facial expressions and differences in movement (i.e. a robot character would be jerky).
Later he screamed. He brought up the screen shots and called me over. I have to say, I would be impressed if I still had my C-64 running. They went with a very very cartoony feel to the game. Unfortunately it did not have good shading contrasts between the character and the background. Also there was some scenery that looked nice (though the caves entrance look a lot like the troll caves in CoH) there was some that was downright scary. The trees, if you look carefully, are all the same. Plus the characters have a heavy black line delineating them from the background.
Another thing they were bragging about was the bad guy to villain ratio and how it is lower than CoH. They also brag up its RPGness...which I have to admit is pretty much impossible for a computer to run an RPG (we've all played Zork and know anything but a HAL-9000 can only give you fixed scenarios).
I'll give it a try if they put out a free code, but from what I saw CoH is in no danger of dying out from this thing.
Just my two cents.

Remember, the game is still in VERY early development. All the texture maps and art aren't going to be in place yet. I'm not saying I'd want to drop CoH for it, but I'm sure it'll get there.
The people developing it are the same ones that developed CoH, so it's bound to be pretty decent looking once it comes about.

From the stuff I've heard about Champions, some stuff intrigues me (make your own arch-nemesis, comic book style shading). But there's also stuff that worries me (reports of a lack of "micro-leveling"--such as CoH's enhancement system--what comic book shading will look like when it's animated, the need to make in work for console gaming possibly leading to sparser power sets). And I wonder how much we can give credence to the idea that it's "from the guys that created City of Heroes", given that many of those guys now work for NCSoft NorCal.
I'm having too much fun with CoH to just drop it for another game. I'll keep an eye on it, and if the reviews are great I might switch over to try it out for myself. But if the reviews are less than great, I won't feel bad about skipping it.
I'm an incurable altoholic, but most recently I've played as these characters:
Abana (hero, Champion), lvl 44 mag tanker, stone/stone/fit
Etain Echraide (hero, Virtue), lvl 21 mag controller, plant/therm
One Man Vs. The Mob (hero, Virtue), lvl 11 sci blaster, nrg/nrg/fly/stealth
Ballplayer Reverend (hero, Champion), lvl 19 nat tanker, will/mace/speed
