Everything You Need To Know About the Halloween Event
Until the 1st of November, there are lots of exciting things happening in Paragon City. There are 8 unique badges to get, a 5th costume slot and more. This guide will help you with the other aspects, but the main purpose is to help everyone get all the badges as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Defeating Eochai and Jack-in-Irons
First of all, we now have Jack-in-Irons and Eochai running around loose in the city. Each city zone has 3 spawn points for each. They also appear in hazard and trial zones, though Croatoa still has only the normal versions, not the Halloween versions. PvP zones and Eden are supposed to be immune to these monsters, but I can't guarantee this. When a giant monster is present, there will also be glowing jack-o-lanterns all over the area. Sometimes, after one has been defeated, a single pumpkin is left behind for quite a while. As soon as you kill one, another pops up randomly. Be careful as you defeat each giant monster, because this means there is a 1:3 chance of another spawning right on top of you!
Here's some info on the giant monsters for those of you who are not familiar with them.
Eochai is the easier of the two. He's basically a giant Fire/Fire Blaster. He can deal a great deal of damage, but he's rather squishy compared to other giant monsters. If you hit him hard and fast, he'll go down very quickly. Don't be afraid to use up all your buffs and inspirations right away, because he might go down before they wear off. Most of his attacks are fire based, so fire tankers have a very easy time against him. If you defeat the Halloween version of Eochai, you get the Hallow Spirit badge.
Jack-in-Irons is by far the tougher of the two. Jack is similar to an Invulnerability/Mace Tanker. He doesn't deal as much damage as Eochai, but he's very, very hard to hurt. His attacks all have knockback and a chance to stun. Even worse, he seems to have powers similar to the entire Presence pool. I've never seen him taken down with less than two full teams. Don't even think of fighting him without bringing some Break Frees, a healer with Clear Mind or some other protection against his fear (which will paralyze you, much like a hold) and the stuns from his attacks. Knockback Resistance from the empowerment stations in your supergroup bases is very helpful, too (and it's one of the cheapest in salvage cost). Even with a large force, expect a long battle and pace your inspirations accordingly. If you defeat the Halloween version of Jack-in-Irons, you get the Iron Warrior badge.
When they appear in the city, both giant monsters will be surrounded by Unseelie. These are unique monsters you won't find anywhere else. They look like little, dark ghosts. Defeat 25 of them to get the Ghost Touched badge. I've never seen very many around either at a time, but the monsters are out enough for you to find enough Unseelie easily enough.
I can't tell you where all the spawn points are. Nobody knows them all yet, but it is easy to find them because of the massive number of heroes searching for them. Just ask on broadcast or request if anyone has seen one and you'll probably get a response. In fact, you'll probably get ten.
Trick-or-Treat
Now for the Trick-or-Treating. This is done by clicking on doors in an appropriate zone. For this purpose, each zone has an assigned level range. You have to be between the assigned levels or nothing will happen. If you have mixed teams, you can still sidekick and exemplar to appropriate levels. A good rule to go by is if the zone has normal mobs your level, you can trick-or-treat there. There's actually a level or two of leeway in most zones, though. You can do this in absolutely any zone, but I wouldn't reccomend you try this in a PvP zone unless you actually like to be ambushed.
All you have to do is click on random doors. Any door you could go through for a mission counts, even cave doors, sewer entrances and Croatoa mushroom portals. Some people like to use the elevator doors in the arena. You can click on a door every 60 seconds. You can even click on the same door every 60 seconds if you wish. This is very convenient, because 60 seconds happens to also be the duration of an inspiration, so you can use them as egg timers; just pop one when you get your trick or treat, then click again when the inspiration wears off. Of course, an actal egg timer works better. I'm using the minute-glass from an old Boggle game.
There is a rumor going around that there's a separate timer to limit how often a single door can be used. This is absolutely not true. There was such a limitation on the test server, but there were enough complaints about it to get the developers to take this limit away. Using two doors will sometimes save you a few seconds, however. This has nothing to do with the size of your team; it's just a very minor glitch. You'll save your second or two this way just as often with a team of two as with a team of eight. Regardless, if you're planning do this long enough to get everything with a small team or solo, it's worthwile to find a pair of doors together, such as apartment doors in a corner or a pair of elevators in the arena. Those individual seconds add up in the hours it takes to get that last badge. With a large team, the difference is insignificant.
There are two things that can happen when you click on a door. Either you get a treat (a gift of an inspiration, salvage or temp power) or a trick (monsters come out and attack you). There's a 50/50 chance of either.
Most of the treats will be inspirations, but there are two special things to watch for.
First of all, there's a temp power: Rock. This is a very minor power. It's the same attack the Contaminated in Outbreak use, except that this version lasts for only one use. This is an extremely rare treat which most likely not everyone on your team will get.
The most popular change from the last Halloween event is the addition of special salvage. This time, you can find Hamidon Costumes, Lord Recluse and Statesman masks and Back Alley Brawler Gloves. They look like this:
If you can collect one of each, head to Croatoa and talk to Annah to unlock your 5th costume slot. More about that later.
The tricks are groups of (barely) unique bad guys who come out and attack you. Expect to recognize them, however. Most look just like thier common counterparts and have the same powers, but have a different name. There are six different types of monsters and five badges you can earn, as follows:
Spirits: Defeat 20 to earn the Buster badge. These resemble Circle of Thorns Spectral Daemons.
Streng: No badge. These are just there to fill the ranks and keep you hunting longer. They're just normal Fir Bolgs.
Vampires: Defeat 20 to earn the Hunter badge. These resemble Council Vampyri.
Werewolves: Defeat 15 to earn the Shifter badge. These resemble Council Warwolves.
Witches: Defeat 75 to earn the Malleus badge. These are colorful versions of Witches with dark powers instead of storm.
Zombies: Defeat 50 to earn the Dead Head badge. These resemble Banished Pantheon cadavers.
The Witches, Werewolves and Vampires also have lieutenants and bosses.
Getting the Costume Slot
When you've had your fill of trick-or-treating, it's time to go talk to Annah in Croatoa and get your extra costume slot.
She's just outside the wall around the train station, at the SE corner. I'm next to her on this map. Try not to get too close to the orange trees on your way there if you're not familiar with this zone.
Her coordinates are 860 / 0 / 2250.
When you talk to her, she has this to say:
| QUOTE | | These are magical days indeed. To show your worth to the Ravenwing cabal, I ask that you bring me some souveniers of the season of the witch. These are costume pieces from some of the more popular costumes of the day. Bring me one Statesman Mask, one Lord Recluse Helmet, one Back Alley Brawler Gloves, and one Hamidon costume. If you do this, I will grant you access to another Costume Slot. |
Note that the salvage names are slightly different from the ones you have, but that doesn't really matter. If you have the Back Alley Brawler Gloves, Hamidon Costume and Statesman and Lord Recluse Masks, the option to "Give Annah the Salvage" will appear. Click on it and she has this to say:
| QUOTE | | Excellent, everything is here... now I will bestow upon you... an additional costume slot! |
And that's all you have to do. You now have your costume slot.
One last thing to consider: Annah will remain for some time, possibly indefinately. There are no plans yet to remove her. This means that any extra salvage you have can be given, traded or sold to other toons. Many supergroups are already hoarding it in base storage. Save the rest for later, especially if you happen to be an altoholic like me!
That's everything you need to know. Now get out there and have some Halloweeny fun!
