A guide to being a pure empathy defender by Jinxy cat, Jinxy Ririn, who ever you know me as.

Ok due to boredom and lack of up to date empathy guides I have decided to write my own, and my 1st guide for city of heroes.

This is a guide for Defender Empathy but I guess most would hold true for controllers too.

Also this is a guide to being a pure empathy hero meaning your soul reason for being on a team is to stop people from dying.

The empathy i'm basing this on is Ririn, my 1st empathy with psi as a secondary I dinged 26 earlier today so i’m not very high
Yet, however I still feel this guide will be a good one.

ok early on up to lvl 18 I actually had 4 attack powers didn’t have absorb pain and did as much attacking as I did healing, then issue
7 went live I got my respec and decided pure empy was the way to go. Basically in a decent size team keeping the team alive
It just takes up all of your time especially if your team is out of its depth.


What powers to get. Not in any real order, but basically unless stated other wise get it when it becomes available.

Recommended slots (training 6 heal) (DO 4 heal 2 charge) (SO 3 charge 3 heal) this goes for your main 3 heals.


Healing aura - best power in the empathy set if you ask me, encourage squishy heroes to stand by you, and let this off when
Ever anyone’s health drops a little. All being well this is all you will need if the tanks are tanking (assuming you have tanks)
Usually this is the only heal you will need. But that’s rarely the case, if you see someone’s health drop in a significant way
You will need:-

Heal Other - heals for just under double healing aura decent charge time combined with healing aura is enough to stop most people
from being dead. Ah but yes you do get times when neither one of them is charged and someone is in the red, bring on:-

Absorb Pain - ok I must stress only ever use this power as a last resort. I mean it, as noble as it is giving your life to save a team
mate, you may end up killing the whole team in a worst case scenario that is. If used at the incorrect time you will be lucky to
Get out with your life. Make sure if you need to use this power you are not being aoed, or shot at in any way or form.
while its true the damage you take from this power is very minor, many times I have been on fire and almost died after using this
see when you use this power nothing will heal you, not respites, not your heals, not anyone’s heals, for about 20 seconds I think
and if your on fire you can be taking a lot of damage. the heal however can pretty much fully heal a hero, being more than 2x as
effective as heal other.

so those are you main 3 powers, the ones you need to have to be an empy.

Clear Mind - frees people from holds, immobs, disorients, its a cool power. but early on you will rarely have call for it.

ok its on my list of powers to get, but have not got round to it yet, i’m gonna get it at 28 I think, I don’t think I have any other powers to get then, so 28 it should be.

Slot 3 charge
Fortitude - great power, better accuracy, more damage, more defence. get this depending on how many people are in a team I will
try to give it to everyone I just use the team bar start at the top and work my way down. you can probly get 4 people with it at
same time if you grant it as soon as its ready. as long as you have but if the team is full I will do as above but with tanks, scrappers
blasters basically people who will be more useful to the team if they have it:-

Slot 3 charge
Resurrect - brings a hero to life with full hp and end. enough said really. ok I like to think if your doing your job right you will
never need this. but even the best empy cant always keep everyone alive, people get 1 shotted, may have gone stray where
you cant heal them, perhaps you were watching the TV while playing and someone died, maybe lag and you could not get the heal off
in time, it happens people die. this brings em back to life.

Slot 3 charge
Recovery Aura - ok the base endurance regen for this is more than enough to keep bring a heroes end from 0 to 100 and keep it there
for the duration of the power. 90 seconds. you will need to make a basic bind for this. mine is /bind g "say Everyone come to Rirn now for Recovery Aura!"
press that wait for people to come to you and set it off. you choose how long you wait for everyone, but I always try to get everyone.
take ages to charge but with Hasten and 3 charge SOs the down time aint too bad.

slot 3 charge and 3 heal
Regeneration Aura - ok I literally only just got this power but was teaming with a guy who had it all day today I also seen it previously.
I believe its a 500% increase in HP regen, so as long as your team aint fighting +5s it should make the healers life a lot easier. I need to run
tests on this of course but you will want this power for sure.

Hasten - a must for any pure empy. cuts down massively on charge times esp. on fortitude, rez, auras and it just makes your normal heals come
back that much faster when its running. get it

Recall friend - used this power a lot today in a failed respec. 2 healers I was the pure one though so I was the one that got away.
now I wont run as a healer unless I have no choice, but if the team starts falling and you cant keep the team together you run, get safe.
a team wipe yes it happens that’s when you need this power. tp and rez. its a must.

fitness - healers always need to be in a good place. I like being higher up if I can. just above people, boxes, crates what ever but it helps
and keeps you out of harms way. get

slot just the 1 that comes with it for jump.
Hurdle it will help you to reach these places. also you can use this instead of sprint when running around.

health or swift. now I have health atm but I think I will swap it out for swift. basic reason as a healer you don’t need it.
if your popping off your pbaoe as you should be your health should never be an issue and if that don’t keep you alive. health aint gonna
so I advise swift really.

Stamina - with the new defender inherent power end usage is way better than it used to be. and you just use less endurance. but when
RA is charging and your healing constantly none stop for 10 mins, you will be glad you have stamina. although I think you can get away without
slotting it.

hover - its always useful to have a vertical power of some kind. it means you can get over any obstacle, all be it slowly. but being able to hover is a useful
power to have, I use it all the time and it helps you a little when knockdown powers are coming your way.

ok after this its not from my experience but I do research so I will just say what powers I will be getting.

Adrenaline Boost - Recovery aura and regen aura as a single shot power. with more damage thrown in just for fun, I will be getting this,
I will be using it like I would fortitude.

Epics, power build up in the power mastery set. if I only use 1 power in here it will be power build up -
from what I can gather this is just like build up, with a twist. if you have used build up you know how effective it is. so imagine if you will
that same effect but with recovery aura and regen aura and maybe 1 fortitude and Adrenaline Boost it will be awesome.

ok that’s basically it for powers.

ok tactics of the pure healer.

go into all situations thinking this - your only job is to keep the team alive. that’s it. heal heal heal heal and then heal.

tell the squishes in the team to stay by you. that way you keep as many people in range of healing aura as you can.
the only people that should be out of its range should be tanks and scrappers. who should take less damage anyway. and a heal other
every now and then is all they should need. keep an eye on the team bar, if you see peoples health drop heal them, if more than 1 persons
health drops heal who ever is lowest, it really is that simple. cast fortitude as soon as its charged. try to even it out so everyone gets it
but generally start with the people that will be able to help the team more if they have it.

use recovery and regen aura as soon as you can, and slot the charge on them the same so they will be done at the same time. try not to
cast it at the end of a fight, or when you cant see anything large enough to need it, you know all the times in a mission when the team
stops dead before a group, and everyone has to say ready to continue, that’s when you cast it. just before a big fight, when you will need it.

if you see someone’s health drop who isn’t in range of healing aura you use heal other, now if it doesn’t go off you have a problem, this means
people are splitting up. and as soon as you track em down and heal them and no one is in danger, tell the team to stay together.

too many times someone has died cos I was running to help someone about to die who is on their own half way down a corridor miles away from the group
so its up to you to get the team to stay tight to you.

try to get by on your main 2 heals, healing aura and heal other, don’t be using absorb pain as part of your healing power chain. its what I
call a panic button heal only to be used if someone is about to die and nothing else is charged that can help them. remember if you use it
and it kills you it could cause a team wipe I know its a worst case scenario but it could happen.

if you are a pure healer unless you get hit by an aoe you should generally go un noticed by the enemies, you can usually run around freely even close enough
to use healing aura on the tank and go totally unseen, if you don’t attract any aggro they will leave you alone. so don’t attack
you should rarely even have time to think about attacking anyway healing takes up all your time.

find good places to be to get out of harms way, if you can stand on a box you will likely not take aoe damage and also be in a much better position
to heal as you wont have to worry about line of sight so much.

now all of the above are just random tips I thought of while writing, its the way I play my empy and so far everyone I teamed with has thought highly of me
if your a controller being an empy it might not work as healing would be a 2ndry power and atm I only have 1 of my 2ndry set, I don’t attack
at all. so a controller empy would be more of a backup healer in my eyes, and I have been on teams with other defender and controller empys
I am always the main healer by default. its like a bulldog having 2 poodles as back up. lol.

well there you have it, Jinxy cats guide to being an empy. I hope it helps, as all of my other heroes have been offensive, this is my 1st
empy and my 1st guide so I have done my best. being an empy is fun. and you notice how much difference you make on a team , granted most
heroes will be more wreckless when your on a team cos they can afford to be, but you can see when your healing some people every few seconds
without you they would not be alive. the team would not be alive and your the thing keeping everyone alive. its a good feeling.

Great Job - I've done mostly empaths and you cover the 'dedicated healer' pretty well. IF I were to build one without any plan to solo - ever; I would take all the Medicine secondary power set in addition to what you have here. Although they can be interrupted the usually work fine during combat and give you four handy items, another heal, another clear mind, another rez, and a heal self. I also recommend slotting the hover with 3 defense as time permits - this will allow you to stand right on top of AVs and the like with minimal chance of taking serious damage.

i was thinking about opening the healing pool actually but with hasten and absorb pain as a back up your heals are always there. although having the 2nd rez would come in handy i have to admit.

i also wouldnt mind having stealth but well you can only have 4 pools open anyway. but ill see later on, i will also have to have some attacks cos for powers to choose. but bleh what can ya do.
