Controller Powers

This is another of my simple guides to archetype’s power sets. As usual, I will give a short description of the type and a quick synopsis of each of the power sets right off the program, followed by my opinion of the set in red.

The Controller Archetype (AT) is the closest thing to a pure support toon that you can make in COH. He’s not even close to a damage dealer and not even remotely capable of holding agro while other types attack. So taken just on that he sounds like the weakest AT there is. However, what he does have is powers to control the bad guys while everyone else pounds the crap out of them. With the ability to prevent agrro’ed attacks in the first place, no matter what damage has been done, controllers are arguably one of the most powerful AT’s in the game. But they are a bit of a specialist type and not that great solo. But in a team they can be the anvil against which all other AT’s hammer the baddies. As such they are a bit more advanced in game play style.

Primary Power Sets

Earth Control
You can control the forces of the Earth. You can manipulate earth and stone to defeat your foes. The crushing force of many earth powers can reduce a target’s defense. Being of the earth, many of these powers need to be performed while on the ground.
Very high in immobilize powers and good on Area of Effect (AOE) attacks. Good slowing attacks and a “mini-tank” for a pet.

Fire Control
You can control the essence of fire to entrap, scorch, and manipulate your foes with smoke and flame.
Fire damage with good damage over time (DOT). Good immobilize and hold powers with high damage dealing, large number of pets.

Gravity Control
This power set allows you to manipulate the forces of gravity to control your foes. Enemies have little defense against gravity powers.
Good penetration of enemy defenses, good AOE attacks, pretty high performance pet, but draws a lot of agro (focused enemy attention).

Ice Control
You can draw moisture from the air to create icy formations. With these abilities, you can control ice with remarkable precision to dominate your foes.
Very good immobilize and slowing powers and penetrates most bad guys defenses, decent pet.

Illusion Control
You can manipulate light and sounds to manifest all sorts of illusions, aiding your allies as well as deceiving your foes.
Best power for pets, getting three of them with the first one at 18 (the earliest of any of them), lowest number and weakest of the actual hold powers. Invisibility/stealth/grant invisibility without having to have the concealment power pool set.

Mind Control
You can manipulate and control your opponent’s mind. Since mental powers directly affect the mind, most tend to be very accurate, and thus very useful against higher level foes. Few foes can resist Psionic powers, but creatures without minds, like machines and robots, are resistant to many of the effects.
Effectively bypasses most bad guys defenses, is still effective against machines, accuracy bonus, excellent single target holds, no pet.

Secondary Power Sets

Empathy
Empathy gives you the ability to heal and aid allies as well as yourself. Empathy has no offensive powers, but it’s heals and buffs are unmatched.
The favorite standby support power set, easy point and shoot buffs for every occasion, to assist every problem area in a toons powers, highly sought after by teams.

Force Field
The force field powers give you the ability to create shells of energy that protect yourself and your allies from various forms of damage and harm. Force fields do not reduce damage, but reduce your allies chance of getting hit in the first place.
Straight up teammate defense enhancement, buffs are long lasting and at higher levels and in bigger groups can be a major asset for team survival.

Kinetics
You are a master at manipulating and transferring kinetic energy. You can manipulate the potential energy found in objects to aid your allies or weaken your foes.
A personal favorite, very effective buffing power set, most of the best powers of empathy set with better effectiveness, but requiring bad guys present for effects. Somewhat more complicated style than Empathy. Built in powers can take the place of travel power pools.

Radiation Emission
Radiation emission powers allow you to manipulate atomic particles and waves to protect your allies and weaken your enemies.
Good support set, Accelerate Metabolism one of the best buffs, high level debuff effects and good general heals. Good immobilize attack as well.

Sonic Resonance
You have the ability to control sound in several fashions. You can create semi-solid barriers, set up waves which weaken or strengthen a target, as well as creating soothing sounds which act to counteract any negative effects which may exist on your friends.
Good mix of attacks similar to all the other buff groups, although somewhat weaker than the counterparts. Mix of radiation and clear mind type buffs, force field style buffs, earthquake style attack and a hold. Enemy debuff side effects.

Storm Summoning
You can command the forces of nature! Storm summoning allows you to control wind and weather to aid your allies and wreak havoc on your foes.
Good knock back attack powers, heal/clear mind combo power, slowing attack, group stealth and pet style high damage attack power.

Trick Arrow
Trick Arrows are tipped with an odd variety of payloads, which if used strategically, can dramatically alter a battle site.
Wide variety of special attacks powers covering the gamut of enemy debuff abilities. Generally not high damage but good hold, immobilize and DOT damage.
