Defender Powers

This is another of my simple guides to archetype’s power sets. As usual, I will give a short description of the type and a quick synopsis of each of the power sets right off the program, followed by my opinion of the set in red.

Defenders are designed to be the tried and true support toons. Unlike the tanks, which are the shield of a team, or the scrappers and blasters, the sword of the team, defenders are Hero Support (lol). Defenders are designed mainly to buff (enhance or increase the abilities of) their teammates or debuff the bad guys, making them easier to kill. They can heal, or increase damage, accuracy, etc. They can increase speed or give force fields to other teammates. They also are able to get blast powers in order to enhance the overall team capabilities. Although the blast powers they get aren’t quite as powerful as their blaster counterparts, they can add significant support to the teams’ firebase. And although they are squishy toons (low hit point) some people do throw enhancements into the blast powers to boost their effectiveness and play as a light blaster with buff abilities.

Primary Power Sets

Dark Miasma
Focus the dark power of the Netherworld to weaken your foes. Dark Miasma focuses on draining your opponent.
Unique to the defender powersets, very much a controller-like set. Lots of holds, slowing powers and a pet. Also team stealth power.

Empathy
Empathy gives you the ability to heal and aid allies as well as yourself. Empathy has no offensive powers, but it’s heals and buffs are unmatched.
The favorite standby support power set, easy point and shoot buffs for every occasion, to assist every problem area in a toons powers, highly sought after by teams.

Force Field
The force field powers give you the ability to create shells of energy that protect yourself and your allies from various forms of damage and harm. Force fields do not reduce damage, but reduce your allies’ chance of getting hit in the first place.
Straight up teammate defense enhancement, buffs are long lasting and at higher levels and in bigger groups can be a major asset for team survival.

Kinetics
You are a master at manipulating and transferring kinetic energy. You can manipulate the potential energy found in objects to aid your allies or weaken your foes.
A personal favorite, very effective buffing power set, most of the best powers of empathy set with better effectiveness, but requiring bad guys present for effects. Somewhat more complicated style than Empathy. Built in powers can take the place of travel power pools.

Radiation Emission
Radiation emission powers allow you to manipulate atomic particles and waves to protect your allies and weaken your enemies.
Good support set, Accelerate Metabolism one of the best buffs, high level debuff effects and good general heals. Good immobilize attack as well.

Sonic Resonance
You have the ability to control sound in several fashions. You can create semi-solid barriers, set up waves which weaken or strengthen a target, as well as creating soothing sounds which act to counteract any negative effects which may exist on your friends.
Good mix of attacks similar to all the other buff groups, although somewhat weaker than the counterparts. Mix of radiation and clear mind type buffs, force field style buffs, earthquake style attack and a hold. Enemy debuff side effects.

Storm Summoning
You can command the forces of nature! Storm summoning allows you to control wind and weather to aid your allies and wreak havoc on your foes.
Good knock back attack powers, heal/clear mind combo power, slowing attack, group stealth and pet style high damage attack power.

Trick Arrow
Trick Arrows are tipped with an odd variety of payloads, which if used strategically, can dramatically alter a battle site.
Wide variety of special attacks powers covering the gamut of enemy debuff abilities. Generally not high damage but good hold, immobilize and DOT damage.

Secondary Power Sets

Archery
The ancient art of archery allows you to use a bow and arrow to great effect. This power set has a bonus to accuracy.
Pretty light in the damage department and slow animation, but good special attack types and accuracy bonus.

Dark Blast
Dark Blast summons the powers of the Netherworld to defeat your foes. The draining effects of most of these powers can reduce your targets’ Accuracy.
Unique to the defender set, negative energy blasts, which most baddies can’t resist, accuracy debuff, extremely long range snipe, hold power, life drain and nova-type power.

Electrical Blast
Electrical Blast endows you with ranged electrical attacks. Electrical attacks can drain foes endurance and can often halt their endurance recovery. This can be quite effective against higher level foes and bosses. Some powers can even transfer endurance back to you.
In my opinion fairly low damage rating (although others will disagree), endurance drain is ok, but rarely see it transfer back to me. Hold, pet and high powered targeted AOE attack are impressive.

Energy Blast
Energy Blast allows you to hurl bolts of energy at your foes, and can often send them flying with knock back.
Good range attacks with knock back effects. Includes good short range attacks, long range sniper and powerful AOE attack. Very effective power set for keeping the bad guys at a distance.

Psychic Blast
Blast villains with an array of offensive Psionic powers. Most psychic blast powers have long ranges, and few living beings can resist their effects. Creatures without minds like machines and robots are all but immune.
Unique to the defender sets, effectively bypasses most bad guys defenses, is still effective against machines, hold powers and a nova-type power.

Radiation Blast
Blast your foes with lethal radiation. Radiation Blast powers can bypass normal defenses, and lower your targets overall defense.
Unique to the defender sets, defense debuffs, low endurance usage, quick recharge times, but somewhat weak in the higher levels. Good snipe and a nova type-power.

Sonic Attack
Sonic Attack allows you to use sound waves to damage and weaken your foes.
Good powerful short range attacks with damage resistance debuffs, sleep/disorient attacks and nova-type attack, but no snipe. Good for close range fighting. Debuffs are useful.

I'd just like to toss in a team-mate's view of the Defender. Remember that when running a mission, any mission, your fellow heroes expect you, the Defender, to be slinging around buffs, debuffs, and heals as fast as you can. I'm an altaholic, so I've spent a lot of time with new players, and a common error made by Defenders is to try to fight like a Blaster, while getting a Tanker's view of the situation.

Yes, they charge right in and try to use their secondary powers, often getting killed and leaving the team without once using a buff/debuff power. Hopefully, every would-be Defender reading this realizes just how silly that is.
