Tanker Powers

This is another of my simple guides to archetype’s power sets. As usual, I will give a short description of the type and a quick synopsis of each of the power sets right off the program, followed by my opinion of the set in red.

Tanks are the tough guys of the game. They are intended to be the shield of the team. They are designed to Agro the bad guys, which means get and hold their attention due to damaging them or taunt type powers. Tankers are designed to keep the baddies attention on them even when the damage done by the damage dealers, scrappers and blasters, would normally pull them away, and to survive the attempt. Toward that end their primary power sets are shields and their secondaries are laced with taunt enhanceable attacks. This AT is not meant to do damage dealing, but some do stack their toons attacks heavy in damage in order to become a damage dealer. These toons are normally referred to as Scrankers (scrappy tankers). You can find a guide for the specialty types of tanks here.

Primary Power Sets

Fiery Aura
You can engulf yourself in flames to protect yourself. Fiery aura offers superior resistance to fire damage, but weak resistance to cold damage and no protection to knockback. Fiery aura is the most offensive of the tanker’s defensive power sets, offering some damage output.
Good damage output from auras, damage resistant type shields. Self heal, self resurrect, and endurance recovery powers.

Ice Armor
You can dramatically reduce your core body temperature to form various armors of ice around yourself. You can protect yourself from many different damage types, and you gain exceptional resistance to cold based attacks. However, this set offers little protection to fire based powers and no protection against Psionics.
Good damage resistance, resistance to hold/knockback and toxic powers, endurance drain powers and an invulnerable/super heal power.

Invulnerability
Invulnerability gives you incredible abilities to resist damage and other effects. Its resistance to physical damage is superior, however, Invulnerability offer no protection from Psionics.
You take less damage during combat. Very high damage resistance, defense increase powers, hit point increase powers as well as a moment–of-glory (MOG) type power, which drastically increases your defense for a short time.

Stone Armor
You can transform your skin into various forms of rock and stone. Stone armor is one of the only tanker defensive power sets that offers defense against Psionics. Stone armor offers amazing defense, but a few stone armors are mutually exclusive to each other. Stone armors, although offering superior defense, also slow you down due to its enormous bulk.
Best of all for defense including Psionics, hit point increase power, AOE slowing power. Teleport is a must to get around with the slowing powers in this set on.

Secondary Power Sets

Battle Axe
You can wield a battle axe and master a variety of powerful lethal attacks. Battle axe is a slow but powerful weapon that has a tendency to send foes flying. This massive weapon has a bonus to hit.
Exceptional damage but slow animation. Taunt and build-up powers in this set.

Energy Melee
You can use energy melee to power your blows with pure energy. These focused power attacks often disorient opponents.
Powerful one on one punching attacks. Taunt and build-up powers in this set.

Fiery Melee
Fiery melee allows you to attack with fire, and even conjure up flaming melee weapons. Fiery melee powers tend to set foes ablaze for added damage over time (DOT).
Good damage attacks with fire DOT. Taunt and build-up powers in this set.

Ice Melee
Ice Melee allows the player to use cold-based attacks, and even conjure up frozen melee weapons. Ice melee powers are known for their ability to slow an opponent.
Good melee attacks, several controller-like hold and slowing powers. Taunt and build-up powers in this set.

Stone Melee
You can use the powers of the earth and stone to do battle with your foes. Stone Melee allows you to strike with fists of stone, summon earthen weapons and even quake the very ground itself.
Powerful attacks but slow animation, has two ranged attacks, foot stomp, AOE knockback. Taunt and build-up powers in this set.

Super Strength
Super Strength gives you combat powers derived from your superhumjan physical strength. Super Strength powers tend to knock foes back.
Basic powered punching attacks, one ranged attack, foot stomp, Taunt and Rage, which increases your damage and accuracy but leaves you drained afterwards.

War Mace
You can wield a medieval Mace and master a variety of powerful Smashing attacks, Attack speeds are good, and the weight of the mace has good disorienting capabilities. The sheer weight of this weapon give it a bonus to hit.
Good attacks, decent speed on animation, good AOE/cone attacks. Taunt and build-up powers in this set.

Firey Aura: You're not a scrapper. You'll need acro and Tough if you REALLY want to tak.
Ice: Defense based set. Energy absorbtion is probably one of the best powers for regaining endurance in the game.
Invulnerability: Capped resist to S/L. You won't be able to take much else... Unstop is a great power with a big crash at the end.
Stone: Granite. What else is there to say? Near capped resist to everything but Psi and good defence to boot. Has trouble keeping aggro however due to the -recharge.
