This is an explanation of the Heads Up Display (HUD) in the game. This is your main interface screen that you view the COH world through. The default HUD everyone gets when they first start out looks something like this:

The main display in the HUD which can’t be removed and controls all others is the one in the upper right corner. This display shows your health and stamina in the scrolling colored bars. In addition if you have an inbuilt power such as defiance it will show in a bar below the stamina bar. It also shows your XP level relative to leveling up. Each one of the little pieces of the circular indicator on the far right represents ten percent of the XP needed to level up. Each little indicator is referred to as a bubble, bub or bar. If someone says they have two bubs to level, they mean two of those little indicators to go. In the above picture the toon is a 50 and can no longer level up, so the indicator always shows a full ten bars. Below this window it displays the powers you currently have running. You can change the way it displays by right clicking these little displays and it give you options on how they are displayed. Along the top of this display are tabs you can click that will make the other displays in the HUD appear and disappear.

Also at the top right of the tabs you have the Menu tab. This is the access system to all of the game functions. Here you will find the options to display such things as the character ID window, your costume option window, the settings change panel and the support option. The support window is what you use to send petitions to the game developers. You can report bugs I the game you see, or missions that won’t complete even though you have searched the whole thing for that last bad guy and he’s not there, or you can use it to report another player for griefing you.

The first tab at the top of the main display is for the Chat window. This is in the lower left of the screen above. This is your main interface for communicating with other players. It looks like this:

When you’re not in a team the top of the window will display your team options. The drop down window at the top allows you to show, in other players search windows, what you are looking for, i.e. missions, task forces, not looking to team at all, etc. Below that is a window where you can type a short description of yourself or what you want to do or what you can do. For instance an empathy defender can put that he is empathy and everyone will know he’s a healer. This will prompt more invites than leaving it blank. Below that is the tabs for the various other chat screens. More on those in a minute.

Below that you have two built in chat windows. The default on these has the global and chat tabs, which have preset filters built in. If you right click these windows you can make custom tabs that have only certain channels. Everything else is filtered out and you can’t see it in that window when you click on that particular tab. In the above picture there are custom tabs that say rewards and team. These are custom tabs only showing the desired channels in game. Below is what the tab customizing window looks like:

You can click add or remove to add certain channels. By default it names the tab after the first channel you select but you can change the name of the tab at the top.

Below those windows you have the chat window. Clicking in this small window will start the chat option and anything you type will appear there. When you hit enter after typing it will display your ext in the channel that is currently active. The currently active channel is displayed at the left of the typing window. To change currently active channel you click the tiny little buttons right above the chat typing window. Or you can also right click in the window you want to change the channel to and select another channel.

The Friends tab will show you the list of friends you have added to your lists. You can add friends by right clicking them and say add friend or add global friend. Add friend makes them visible in the list of just this toon. Global friend will be visible no matter what toon you play, but the person has to approve that. The friends screen looks like this:

The drop down window at the very top allows you to switch between global and local friends.

The Super tab allows you to view the super group window, which looks something like this:

This shows you the list of people in your super group, assuming you are in one. If not this window will be blank. It shows you their level, archetype (AT) rank in the SG, last time they logged on, etc. This is also where you enter SG mode so that your SG gets prestige, the money system for super groups to buy SG items, like teleport pads. The button in the upper right corner will get you into super group mode. If it says exit SG mode then you’re already in it.

The next tab on the main display is for the tray display. This is the one in the lower right which shows your powers. It looks like this:

The little arrow at the top right of the window will allow you to expand the powers tray to show up to three levels at once of powers. In addition to that on the left right next to the number of each tray are small arrows that allow you to cycle through the various numbers of trays you have set up. You can have up to 9 separate tray arrangements with buttons in them and display up to three of those at one time. Across the top of the tray you have tabs for the attached windows for this tray. The first one is the powers tab. It will display the powers window which looks like this:

This will show you a complete list of the powers in the powerset you have chosen for this toon. The ones you have will be bright and the ones you don’t will be grayed out. If you hold your cursor over a specific power it will show a popup giving you a brief description. Also if you right click a power your already have in your tray and click on the info option it will give you a detailed description of the power. This is also where you can see the remaining time/number of shots left on a temp power. If you have a power that does not show up in the powers tray that you know you have, such as a veterans reward power that you have claimed, that you would like to have in the tray you can drag it from the upper window down into the tray. This will also work for fixing a power that you have accidentally removed from your tray. Simply click the power tab and drag the power down to the tray. The individual buttons in your tray can also be dragged around into different placements at will. Simply left click and hold while dragging your mouse.

The next tab is the Inspirations tab. Clicking on it will display your Inspirations window, which looks like this:

These are your one shot power boosts called inspirations. You can read about those in the guide here. As you get higher in level you will get more inspirations slots, up to the maximum of 20, as above.

The next tab is the enhancements tab, which opens the enhancements window, which looks like this:

There is a good guide on enhancements here and the enhancements section detailing all the enhancements here. You can hold up to ten enhancements at one time.

The next tab opens the Salvage window, which looks like this:

Salvage can be used for things like building SG items and for the upcoming invention system.

The next tab in the main display is for the target window, which by default is in the upper left corner of the HUD. It looks like this:

As you can see in the above picture the target window will display the name, level, health and end levels and group affiliations of whatever you select be it bad guy or hero. There is also an action tab below it that will give you all the option that right clicking the target will give you.

The final tab at the top of the HUD is for the nav or navigation window. It looks like this:

It will display things like the current mission, contact you need to see, waypoint that you have set. If you are on a team it will indicate the direction of your leader, etc. At the bottom of this display are tabs for other windows. The first one is the map tab. Clicking it will open the map window, which looks like this:

The map screen has two tabs, city and zone. The city map just shows an overlay of Paragon City. The zone tab shows you the current zone you are in. You can see the stores and tailor shops, trainers, field analysts, etc in this window. You will also be able to see indicators for any team members you have that are in that zone. The options window at the bottom right allows you to blank or make visible the various features of the map.

The next tab is the Contact tab. That window looks like this:

In it you will see all the people you have acquired as contacts and where they are located. You will have an indicator under their name showing how much of their story arc you have completed. When you reach one of several marking points on that bar you will have the option to click a button to call them and get new missions without having to return to their zone.

The next tab is your missions tab. That window looks like this:

If you are I a team every team member that is in the same zone as you will display here with their reputation level and what missions they have. When you click on a mission a button will pop up at the lower right corner allowing you to get details on that mission. The team leader can click on any of these missions and click a big button that displays at the bottom of this list that says select task and that will make it the team mission and make it pop up in every team member,s nav display.

The next tab is the clues tab. It will display clues you have found on your missions.

The last tab is the Badges tab. This window will look like this:

There are tabs across the top for the various types of badges you have acquired and two little arrows to the right of those tabs will allow you to flip through the various types of badges. If you arrow all the way over to the right you will find your veterans tab. This is where you go to claim your veteran’s rewards. It looks like this:

The little button looking things on the on the listed items are just that, you click them to claim what they are offering.

This is the main attributes of the HUD. The various displays you have can be dragged around your screen to be arranged wherever you want them in order to customize your HUD to be however you like it. Here is a gallery of peoples HUD’s. Customize your own however you like. You’ll be the one who has to stare at it all day. After all, as the disclaimer at the bottom of the page says, “Your social lives are now also owned... by City of Heroes.”
