Welcome to my very first guide, How to Make a Great Costume! I have been in many costume contests and have actually hosted one or two, so you can tell that one of my favorite parts of City of Heroes
is the incredible customization of your hero. I have seen many, many great costumes that should be known and praised forever, but I've also seen plenty of "Not-so-good" ones. I want to try and help
everyone with ideas on making costumes. Please remember, though, that these are my opinions and I, in no way, want to force my beliefs on other people.
IN TUNE WITH YOUR ORIGIN
The third thing you pick, after your side and your archetype, is your origin. Plenty of people just click something at random, thinking it doesn't matter,
but it really does. First off, it decides which enhancements you can use, but that's another guide. Second, it decides which will be your first enemy group.
And third, which will be our focus in this section, is your expected look. What I mean by this, is if you see a "technology" origin, you don't expect a
cheerleader right? You don't expect a robot when you see a natural origin. Try to make it correspond with your costume. Throw in some goggles or a robot
arm or something for tech, put on a lab coat if you're science, anything that works well with the origin. This is probably the must minute detail of this
guide, but it still makes an impact, although small.
POWER COMPATIBILITY
This is kind of hard if you're new and don't know what the powers look like, but after some play time and you see most power types, try to make the colors
and shapes of you outfit go with your powers. What I mean is, if you have some fire ability, red, orange, and yellow are expected colors. Blue and green are
kind of clashy, so why choose them? Alter your costume to fit the look of the powers! Simple as that. The only real exceptions are weapon Archetypes, but
they will no longer be an exception when Issue 11 and weapon customization hits.
SHOW YOUR TRUE COLORS
Just because you should try to match your powers doesn't mean you have to have all shades of red and orange! Add some blue gloves or belt if you want,
throw in some black and white for edge, anything to make you feel more comfortable with the overall color balance. I mean, just look at my character!
he's got at least 6 different colors and shades on him. It makes you unique, and unique means more glances, and more glances your way mean more people
worshiping your spectacular costume!
MORE THAN ONE COLOR THERE
One of the most common things I see. You walk through Atlas Park, anywhere in it, and you will find an all black or all blue colored hero. This isn't
horrible, not at all (it's YOUR character after all), but it just makes you look like you have no creativity. Theres a huge color pallet there, use it!
They didn't put it there for nothing.
BE ORIGINAL
One of the most important things. You may have the great idea to look in a comic book or show to get some ideas, and this is such a great way to get ideas.
This is also a great way for some people to do the most horrible crime in costumes ever: COPY! People make characters copying famous heroes and people,
and barely get past the rule about copying other heroes, and they get by it by substituting a few pieces of clothing, or maybe a synonym for one word in the
name. Why would anyone do this? This game is for people to make their own superhero to fight crime, if you want to use other famous heroes, go play an
X-Men or Spider-man game. This is supposed to be a creative game. Not a copyright infringement festival.
FINAL THOUGHTS
On an ending note, try to make something dazzling and original, and people will remember you even more. When you are at level 50 and have poured in hours
of time to work on that character, you will be known for being a great hero, AND having a great costume. Stay positive if you keep making trash at first,
and you will eventually succeed.
May you dominate the competition in costume making,
