Have you ever fought one of the Winter Lords from a Christmas present, only to have it die on it's own before you could defeat it? It's not a timer. He doesn't expire. It's your reinforcements.
The Christmas present glowies trigger a kill effect, which kills all Winter Horde within a certain radius whenever a new hero enters the area. This is the same reason you will often see a bunch of Winter Horde standing around a present, only to fall down dead as you approach. In fact, it's there to make sure the area doesn't fill up with Winter Horde camping all the presents. It gets Winter Lords, too.
To keep this from happening, pull the Winter Lord to a location far from any Christmas present spawn points, then try to keep it from running too close to any more presents.
